Q1. Give standard definitions of Operations Research (OR) as envisaged by different pioneers.
Q2. What are the essential characteristics of OR? Mention different phases in OR study.
Q3. “Executives at all levels in business and industry come across the problem of making decisions at every stage in their day-to-day activities. Operations Research provides them various quantitative techniques for decision making and enhances their ability to make long range plans and solve everyday problems of running a business and industry with greater efficiency, competence and confidence.” Comment with examples!
Q4. Define various OR models and give four examples of each. State their properties, advantages and limitations.
Q5. Comment on the following statements:
(a) OR is an art of winning war without actually fighting it.
(b) OR is no more than a quantitative analysis of the problem.
(c) OR is a war against adhocism.
(d) OR is the art of finding bad answers where worst exists.
(e) OR advocates a system approach and is concerned with optimization. It provides a quantitative analysis for decision making.
(f) OR replaces management by personality.
Q6. Trace the history of the development of OR. Discuss the development of OR in Indian context.
