I really appreciate how Tal Ben-Shahar points out that there is no definite definition to happiness, and that we should focus less on how to be happy, but how to be happier. Happiness is seen as the end goal, something that is the drive for many of the things we do. Taking smaller steps every day that we can stick to is much more productive in becoming happier than making huge changes that we can’t keep up with. If we all just spent a small part of our day every day focusing on happiness, we’d all be happier people. I think that most people, myself included, don’t really think about happiness. We just go through our daily lives and do the things we have to do. The topic of happiness is a more subconscious thing. It’s not something we actively…

We are taught at a very young age that we are to seek out happiness, yet no one really knows what that is. When you are a child, happiness could be found by playing with toys, and schoolmates. When we are children, our concept of happiness is minimal. As years passed, our concept of happiness becomes much more expansive. We are schooled to think that if we succeed at something, whether it is at a career, college or in relationships, we are seeking to be happy. Some people seek out happiness through religion, or a spiritual leader, "Who so trusteth in the Lord is happy" (Proverbs 4:7). It seems that everyone has their own idea as to what makes them happy. It becomes ingrained in us that seeking happiness is the point of our existence. To find happiness, then we will be living a complete life. What makes happiness, or better yet, where happiness exists is a question that has been pondered by many great thinkers. Aristotle, Immanuel Kant, Plato and Socrates had quite a bit to say on the subject. All of these well-known philosophers have a road map to happiness, religion, passion and objectivity. Yet, their theories differ ultimately in how to go about attaining each of them.…

The everlasting question of "What is Happiness?" has been inquired since the creation of men. Unfortunately, the only agreed answer that humanity came up with is that all the creatures seek happiness, but no one has the concrete directions for achieving it. Our libraries are overwhelmed with books about happiness, but no dictionary definition explains which path men must take to be happy. No mathematician gave us the axiom which we could use to solve the problem of living in bliss. No scientist brought up the formula of fusing certain ingredients to produce the "drink of happiness". Still almost all the people consider that their ultimate purport in life is to achieve happiness. Ironically, very few of us can say, with certainty, that he/she is absolutely happy.…

People differ from each other in every single aspect like the way they think and the way they act despite of where we live in this world. Every single person has set their priorities and they have their own ways to be happy. We cannot say one common thing can bring happiness to all. Let’s take money as an example; most people believe that life would be worse without money and I agree with it, but it may not apply for many because people say even though they are wealthy enough they are not happy. So what makes people happy? What is happiness? Everyone has their own definition of happiness and if I am asked the same question, I would say happiness is the feeling of joy, an extreme pleasure, satisfaction and an intense feeling which cannot be expressed in words. There are many things that make people happy; it can be a small gesture of smile from an unknown person passing by on the road or it can be a really big achievement that we were working on since long time or as I said earlier it varies from person to person. Personally I believe there are three main factors that make us lead happy lives: Love, health and career.…

Many people who possess the requisite conditions for happiness – health and sufficient income – are nonetheless unhappy. Generally this problem is due to an incorrect theory. Other animals, which lack theories but act on instinct, take pleasure in existence. Humans sometimes do not let their plans conduce enough with instinct, so even if they fulfill their plans, they cannot be happy. People who are happy share some common characteristics. “The most important of these things is an activity which at most times is enjoyable on its own account, and which, in addition, gradually builds up something that you are glad to see coming into existence [p. 119 bottom]”…

Happiness comes as a result of appreciating smaller things in life instead of crying for bigger things in order to gain happiness. An individual who is alone in his 10,000 square feet mansion can never be as happy as an individual who stays with his family and kids in a 1000 square feet home. A BMW is useless if you have no one beside you whereas you can stay happy travelling in a public transport if you are with the people you love.…
