Definition Essay: How Do People Define Success?
Defining success is never as simple as it seems. People spend their entire lives aiming to be successful in their goals, but in actuality, many individuals don’t even know what it is they’re striving to achieve. The reason for this is that success can be defined in a number of different ways depending on the person that you ask. In particular, countless individuals associate success with the widespread idea that achieving milestones such as gaining wealth or power; but for others, defining success is a more difficult, personal, and complex experience.
For instance, a person achieving genuine success in their life can be determined by if the person is finding joy and pleasure in their career and life experience. Individuals who have jobs that they find interesting and engaging are more likely to be satisfied with their work. In 2015, a study conducted by Jim Asplund and Gwen Elliot found that employees who use their strengths daily are eight-percent more productive and fifteen-percent less likely to quit their jobs than those working in a career field that does make use of their strengths and weaknesses.
On the other hand, some individuals may associate

While some people equate having wealth and power as being successful, that is often not the case. Although earning and having money is an important aspect of our economy and existence, earning large sums of money is not an accurate way of measuring nor determining if a person is successful or not. Those who find true satisfaction in life, regardless of their wealth or social status, are the ones who have reached true success. As put into words by award-winning author Maya Angelou, "success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it." True success is achieved when an individual has reached a point in their life where their goals and achievements are meaningful and

Many people say wealth is the key to measuring success; they are wrong. Success should be measured upon ones happiness, the friends one has and if their goals in life have been attained. It is like saying you can never buy happiness. The American dream is often considered being affluent, but once one becomes rich- if ever- that's all he ever gains and won't be truly happy or successful. This is confirmed time after time again in F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby and in other readings and movies; it has in all probability been proven in your own experiences also. Success is like a rubber-band ball where you keep building and building upon it in hopes to make it a truly grand item to boast.…

Do you know someone rich and famous? Are they confident, popular, and joyful all of the time the idea of mainstream success? Or, on the other hand, are they stressed, having second thoughts about her life choices, and unsure about the meaning of their life? I am willing to bet it is the second one. Marketing and media have effectively brainwashed our society into accepting a false, even potentially dangerous definition of success. Marketers want us to believe that having lots of money, living in a big house, and owning all of the latest cars, fashions, and technology is the key to happiness, and success. This overstated, falsely advertised myth is hardly ever the case in real life. True success requires respect, appreciation, integrity, and patience all of which are traits that by human nature are genuinely difficult to attain especially in the face of modern marketers who relentlessly deceive us, control our thoughts, and steal our independence in order to increase their bottom line.…

The other definition of success that sticks out is that success means being able to live comfortably and without any worries. A very close family friend has said this many times “Being a successful dentist has its perks, I don’t have to worry about anything besides my practice and it is a very comfortable lifestyle.” This gave me a new perspective on what the definition of success was at a young age. He unwittingly taught me that success is making life as comfortable and as worry free as possible. To do this one would think they need copious amounts of money to do this but that is wrong. Many people try to live outside of their means to make them look like they are successful but doing this they are actually doing more harm to their…

First, let us look at the idea of success. Success can come in many forms, depending on the individual. Examples include success in one's career, but success is not just limited to the earning of money and power. People can also have a successful family life, or successful friendships. An environmental awareness project could be deemed a success, yet the success may not even be tangible, since it is difficult, or perhaps even impossible, to measure the growth in environmental awareness.…
