David Geffen: Impact On The Music And Film Industry
David Geffen is and has been a tremendous music entrepreneur, with an enormous impact on the music and film industry. His personality is notorious for being brutally honest, gregarious, and usually right when he makes big business decisions. He has worked with huge names like Neil Young and Bob Dylan and has played a huge role in delivering the public the music that is so often considered the classics. When artists and film makers alike felt they needed some managing, they would take it to David Geffen where they knew they would get an honest answer on what they needed to change. David, a man fro New York had stumbled across the entrepreneurial lifestyle after watching his mom who was a saleswoman in a small shop. His two most successful traits …show more content…
After he sold his business at one point, he thought he would be happy because he made a ton of money on the deal, but what he didn’t realize is that he simply loves the work that he does, and that he didn’t want to stop working.

The area of David Geffen’s Career that I am most impressed by is his ambition to succeed. In my future career, I hope to pretty much do exactly as he did. I want t be a musical entrepreneur and hopefully one day open a music venue or a label or potentially be a music agent. David didn’t let any obstacles stop him on his path to success, even when he was in difficult periods of his career. One thing that I would like to translate to my future career is his ways of going into the unknown and just reaching out a hand and pulling back something

The first step to success is to define your goals of what you want to do and who you want to be like in your future. David decided at an early stage in life that he wanted to be like Louis B. Mayer, which helped him set his path. The second step is to form opinions that you truly believe is the right thing to do and not based off necessarily what others think is right. The third step may seem obvious but it’s to stand by your opinions and not get pushed over by the ‘bigger dog’. When you have an opinion, often just stating it wont get anywhere, but if you stand by it and truly believe in it, that is when your opinion starts to matter. The fourth step is to network like crazy. David success didn’t come from him his own musical recordings but rather from the success of other artists and later movie producers. The trick is to know as many people as you can that can hook you up with extremely helpful resources. The more people you know the better the odds are that you will get into contact with someone that you can benefit greatly off of. And fifth step to success would be to truly do what you love, and not do it just for the money. After David had talked to his mom about when she left her job she said that she had never been happier. David ended up selling his hard earned company for a lot of money, but he realized that what he wanted most wasn’t necessarily just the money, but he truly loved to

As a music lover, I have always studied music artist and their songs/storytelling to piece together what I believed to be a mere glimpse into their lives. However, researching the industry, attempting to gain insight on industry norms and decisions made on behalf of management disturbed me. The establishment of one of the most influential independent (referred to as Indie) labels shed a picture on the evident control money and muscle affords the parent companies (i.e. the major label). The musical expression and the business behind the release of such prove to be as crippling to contractors (i.e. artist/performers) as many of them in modern day are translating through their music, actions, and social media platforms. The file in suit actions of management isn’t only crippling to contractors but also to the independent label itself and the consumers.…

One of the basic tenets of life is that greater opportunities will appear to individuals that actively pursue and know how to recognize them. Since the majority of us do not have the luxury of being born into wealth or power, the choices that we make ultimately shape our successes in life. Adam Carolla begins by using examples to highlight the concepts of consistency and residual income. He explains that it is easier and more useful to understand how to sell something and continue selling it again and again as opposed to figuring out how to simply make a large amount of money. As a student that had performed poorly in high school, he worked a variety of jobs including carpet cleaner and boxing trainer before entering the media industry. Lacking a career support system, Carolla explains that it took him a long time to discover his path. The significance that he takes away from this lesson is the importance of “shooting for the stars” and finding a job that you can enjoy doing as a (pure) living.…

Success is portrayed differently in each person’s mind. However, to be successful, you have to have the drive to achieve that rank. In my church youth group there was always a music competition between the other churches in the tri-state area. It was my last year in the program, so I decided to enter under advanced percussion. The day I signed up was the day I started to write. The competition was months away, but I wanted to get ahead of the game so I can keep my first place title. By the time the competition came around, I had my whole piece written and hours of practice behind me. That constant drive kept me on my toes for this competition because I wanted to be the first place winner. My drive wouldn’t let me settle for second place due to the fact that I wanted to be…

I am very eager to make it myself but at the same time bring all my peers up along with me. In order to make it big, you’ll often need assistance from others. I think the first step to help anyone is to support him or her. People need to hear that they have people backing them and standing by their side. I think the biggest deterrent of tackling anything is fearing that no one else thinks you can do it. If no one else thinks you can do it, you’ll often start questioning yourself and doubting your abilities. People need to hear that they can do it, it’s a mental thing. The mind is a very powerful thing.…
