Child Development and factors/influences affecting development

1) Explain the difference between
The sequence of and rate of development

Sequence- The order in which a child develops a skill.
Rate- The speed (timescale) at which it happens.

Explain why this difference is important Children tend to develop in similar ways and with the same patterns. They will gurgle before talking, crawl before walking and hold a writing tool in a palmer grasp before developing the success of a pincer or tripod grip. Whereas in regards to the rate they do this, every child will do this at individual speeds. There are all sorts of factors that come into play as a child grows. Family life, health, mental state or even basic things like whether they are fed properly. No child is the same and each needs to be treated as a single person. There are time scales in place that give an idea of how the average child will develop but this is just a guideline.

2) Explain how children’s development is holistic and how development across one or more areas also affects other areas of development.

Children’s development is important as a whole as each stage paves the way for the next. You cannot physically move on to certain tasks or skills until you have succeeded in the stage prior to it. This quite often stunts certain children in their tracks. If you look at children with a range of disabilities they cannot accomplish
