Corporate Overview
History: To understand the full history of CVS Health, you must first know the beginnings of companies CVS and Caremark, companies that would eventually become CVS Health. CVS first started as Consumer Value Stores, a health and beauty store in Lowell, Massachusetts. (CVS Health, 2016) Ralph Hoagland, along with brothers Sidney and Stanley Goldstein first founded the company in 1963. (Reuters, 2016) Four years CVS opened the first pharmacy departments in its’ stores. Caremark was founded by James Sweeney in 1979, initially as Home Health Care of America, providing supplies for home parenteral therapies. Primary products/services - CVS Health is healthcare company with several main subsidiaries: CVS Pharmacy, Caremark, Specialty, and MinuteClinic. CVS Pharmacy is the retail pharmacy sector of CVS Health, with nearly 10,000 stores and filling 1 out of every 5 prescriptions, it is one of the largest retail pharmacies in the United States. (CVS Health, 2016) The pharmacies loyalty program, ExtraCare, is the largest of any retail store in the country with 70 million subscribers. CVS Caremark is the prescription benefit management sector of CVS Health, the second largest subsidiary within the business. (Reuters, 2016)This part of the company deals with mail order management along with negotiating with insurance companies and the government over pricing. (CVS Health, 2016) CVS Specialty is a smaller service program for people with compound or uncommon conditions. The program mainly helps with filling unusual prescriptions and specialty counseling. Lastly, CVS MinuteClinics are a group of more than a 1,000 medical clinics inside CVS’s retail pharmacy stores for general healthcare. (CVS Health, 2016) These walk-in clinics provide quick, expedient care for things like minor injuries, vaccinations, and physicals.
