As a nurse advocate for patients in the role of a scientist the nurse is expected to assess,observe and analyze patient data.The observations should correlate with patient experienced symptoms and the RN is responsible for reported these findings to physician.The expectation of the LPN and nursing assistant in the scientist role would be that of data collection.As a detective the RN would analyze all pertinent data. My patient was diagnosed with osteomyelitis of the neck and was just informed by the infectious disease team treatment consisted of six weeks of antibiotic therapy.My patient was also informed at this time that requirement to stay in the hospital for the duration of treatment was needed as a result of past medical history treatment outpatient would not be applicable.My patient was in distress and became very belligerent and threatening towards staff.I was afraid this was my first experience with an agitated patient, I paged the managing physician and allowed my patient to leave against medical advice.The following day the patient was readmitted and was placed on my assignment.That day,I made the decision that my obligation was to my patient and not my fear.As a nurse it is my responsibility to educate my patient and promote health.My patient did not realize the severity of the complications that could arise from not receiving treatment.
