My patient was diagnosed with osteomyelitis of the neck and was just informed by the infectious disease team treatment consisted of six weeks of antibiotic therapy.My patient was also informed at this time that requirement to stay in the hospital for the duration of treatment was needed as a result of past medical history treatment outpatient would not be applicable.My patient was in distress and became very belligerent and threatening towards staff.I was afraid this was my first experience with an agitated patient, I paged the managing physician and allowed my patient to leave against medical advice.The following day the patient was readmitted and was placed on my assignment.That day,I made the decision that my obligation was to my patient and not my fear.As a nurse it is my responsibility to educate my patient and promote health.My patient did not realize the severity of the complications that could arise from not receiving treatment.
