The Dow Jones Industrial Average
Brief Introduction
The Dow Jones Industrial Average also called the, the Dow Jones Industrial, Dow, is a stock market index, and one of several indices created by Wall Street Journal editor and Dow Jones & Company co-founder Charles Dow. It was founded on May 26, 1896, and is now owned by Dow Jones Indexes, which has its majority owned by the CME Group. The average is named after Dow and one of his business associates, statistician Edward Jones. It is an index that shows how 30 large publicly owned companies based in the United States have traded during a standard trading session in the stock market. It is the second oldest U.S. market index after the Dow Jones Transportation Average, which was also created by Dow.
The Industrial portion of the name is largely historical, as many of the modern 30 components have little or nothing to do with traditional heavy industry. The average is price-weighted, and to compensate for the effects of stock splits and other adjustments, it is currently a scaled average. The value of the Dow is not the actual average of the prices of its component stocks, but rather the sum of the component prices divided by a divisor, which changes whenever one of the component stocks has a stock split or stock dividend, so as to generate a consistent value for the index.
Along with the NASDAQ Composite, the S&P 500 Index, and the Russell 2000 Index, the Dow is among the most closely watched U.S. benchmark indices tracking targeted stock market activity. Equivalent indices, such as the FT 30, have largely become redundant in favour of more representative and neutral indicies, such as the S&P 100. Although Dow compiled the index to gauge the performance of the industrial sector within the American economy, the index 's performance

The CPI is meant to be a measure of the cost of living in the United States at any given time. It is used to track inflation. The CPI is derived from the cost of a given “market basket” of products and services that people typically need to buy. In other words, a set of goods and services is made up and the prices of those goods and services are determined. This is used as a baseline. As the prices of those goods and services changes, so does the CPI.…

Rewarding the John Parulis’s article “what just happened to in the stock market?”, government economy plan and Treasury bonds may influence the stock market. And espeacially the government budget increase and government treasury bonds downgraded from AAA to AA+ by standard and Poor’s are important causes for stock market. “Last week, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose or fell by at least 400 points for four straight days, a stock market first. The worst drop was on Monday, 8-8-11, when the Dow plunged 624 points. Monday was the first day of trading after US Treasury bonds were downgraded from AAA to AA+ by Standard and Poor’s. But the roller coaster actually began on Tuesday, 8-2-11, the day after the last-minute deal to raise the U.S. debt ceiling — a deal that was supposed to avoid the downgrade that happened anyway five days later. The Dow changed directions for eight consecutive trading sessions after that, another first.” (John Parulis)…

The week of Friday January 24th 2014 was a bad week for the US stock market. As market close Friday January 24th 2014, the Dow Jones industrial average was at its lowest falling by 1.96% making it the worst week since November 2011 moreover the S&P 500 and NASDAQ also fell by about 2%1 Hibah Yousuf, CNNMoney. The drop in stock prices was a result of slow economic recovery in the United States, EU region, and slowdown in China as well as emerging world economies like Argentina and Turkey. Although the economy forecasts for developed nations look promising, actual economic growth have been daunting since the 2007-08 financial crisis creating lower investor confidence. Low investors’ confidence as a result of slow growth in the US economy is bad for the stock market as investors opt for safer ways to keep their money. Therefore, this could lead to low companies performance/production, low consumer spending that ultimately put negative pressure on stock markets.…

The medium capitalized segment of the stock market is being increasingly perceived as an attractive investment segment with high growth potential. The primary objective of the CNX Midcap Index is to capture the movement and be a benchmark of the midcap segment of the market.  Methodology: The CNX Midcap Index is computed using free float market capitalization method with base date of Jan 01, 2003 and base value of 1000, wherein the level of the index reflects the total free float market value of all the stocks in the index relative to particular base market capitalization value. The method also takes into account constituent changes in the index and importantly corporate actions such as stock splits, right issue, new issue of shares etc. without affecting the index value.  Market Representation: The CNX Midcap Index represents about 11.08% of the free float market capitalization of the stocks listed on NSE as on September 28, 2012. The traded value of all CNX Midcap Index constituents for the last six months ending September 2012 is approximately 17.14% of the traded value of all stocks.  Selection Criteria: The criteria for the CNX Midcap Index include the following: 1. All the stocks, which constitute more than 5% market capitalization of the universe of the stocks traded on NSE (after sorting the securities in descending order of market capitalization), shall be excluded in order to reduce the skewness in the weightages of the stocks in the universe. After step (1), the weightages of the remaining stocks in the universe is determined again. After step (2), the cumulative weightage is calculated. After step (3), companies which form part of the cumulative percentage in ascending order up to first 75% (i.e. 74.99%) of the revised universe shall be ignored. After step (4) all constituents of S&P CNX Nifty shall be ignored. From the universe of companies remaining after step (5) i.e. 75 % and above, first 100 companies in terms of highest market capitalization,…
