Performance Management on Coriant IP Network

Introduction:

What is Performance Management (PM)?
For the purpose of this document PM can be viewed as the ability to monitor/report on key performance indicators (KPI) which is collected from our Transmission network. These KPI’s should give a detailed view of the health of the network that is being monitored and allow us to provide meaningful interpretation of the measured counters.

Performance Management in Vodacom is measured across all the different technology blocks in our network.
• Circuit Switching Core (CS)
• Packet Switching Core (PS)
• Radio Access Network (2G,3G,LTE)
• Transmission Systems (Microwave, SDH/OTN, Packet)

What options are at our disposal? How do we fill the gaps to get a clearer picture?

What can Coriant provide and what can they not provide?
E.g. SW upgrades, HW swops, adding external probes, etc. Please provide quotation’s for hardware and any other external solutions. If there are any short-comings it need to be highlighted and a solution needs to be suggested.
What will the cost implications be on Vodacom. Solutions to collect PM measurements can be either Passive or Active…external probes.

FINAL
Vodacom operates in a very competitive environment and the ability to properly monitor all facets of the network is vital. When any of the 3 main KPI’s are negatively impacted for whatever reason we need to have the ability to rely on our PM counters to help us to quickly troubleshoot and resolve performance degradation before our customers even become aware of the problem. By providing better visibility we can potentially reduce any revenue loss by reacting quicker to service
