Consumer Profiling for Zara Home USA
The Situation
CUSTOMER PROFILING
In 2010, eMarketer reported that 71% of Americans use the internet. They estimated that figure would grow to 78% by 20141. The latest figures by Internet World Stats show that, in 2012, 78% of Americans are already using the Internet2. Internet use is growing at breakneck speeds, and internet shopping is a big part of that use increase.

As an exclusively e-commerce outlet in the United States, Zara Home could view every American internet user as a potential customer. However, Zara Home products are targeted toward women in the age group of 18-34. 27% of the total American population online falls in that age bracket3, almost evenly distributed between men (51%) and women (49%)4. The target audience for Zara Home can therefore, be narrowed down to approximately 13-14% of the American population - women who actively use the internet. The Zara Home target is extremely active online. Usage5 statistics show that they have very high awareness of digital media beyond simply browsing, including social media, mobile and video. This high engagement and activity is an advantage for the brand. Zara Home must now identify which smaller targets within this group will be most open to the brand’s specific, timely and relevant information. It is extremely important to find niche targets that will integrate the brand into their digital experience. Keeping this insight in mind, two niche targets are suggested: Social Moms and Generation “Connected” Women. These niche targets add up to roughly 62 million potential customers for Zara Home,6 though there is bound to be overlap between the two groups.

With our main objective in mind, we have proposed an Integrated Marketing Campaign that is geared towards our target market of young adults. By choosing alternate forms of media that appeal more to our younger target market, we can place Macy’s in these customers’ evoked set. For example, we plan to use media outlets such as social media websites, television, magazines targeted to young adults and direct marketing through email. A main feature we have outlined in this plan is an Interactive Dressing Room on the Macy’s website which will grab the attention of our technologically savvy target market and hopefully form lasting relationships with the company.…

Target aims for high-end buyers, in part because the middle class is shrinking. In general they reach moderate to better income families with active lifestyles and a multitude of hobbies. A Target customer’s median age is 40, and median household income is $64,000. Eighty percent of Target customers are female and thirty-three percent have children at home. 50% of consumers are employed in professional or managerial positions. Around fifty-seven percent of Target customers have completed college. Generally Target’s consumers are interested in buying higher end, quality products. Their primary market is females ages 35-45, therefore this demographic should be the focus of their marketing efforts. Secondary customers could be the spouses of these females who use the products their wives shop for but are not the primary customers making the purchasing decisions. Tertiary consumers could be children in families, using the product but not yet making direct purchasing decisions. These children may become primary consumers later in life, if they associate the brand with positive experiences. Target offers a customer loyalty program which helps generate and keep customers. This program helps identify customer purchasing trends which enables marketers to create effective, targeted promotions, decreasing advertising…
