Concert name: Albert Au 35TH Anniversary Concert
Date and Time: April 27, 2012 (Fri),8:00pm -11:45pm
Place: yuanze

For this concert report I chose to go to a performance of student composers held at YUANZE UNIVERSITY auditorium in building 6. I chose this one because I wanted to see some of the talent that my peers have in the music realm, and also it was one of the only concerts I have been able to attend because of religious restrictions. It was impressive to hear pieces composed by students. I cannot imagine creating something as complex as a musical composition, much less actually performing it, so this aspect of the concert was particularly awe-inspiring. There was a large attendance, and I think that much of the audience consisted of friends of the performers and some of the university students. I went with two friends, who weren’t so eager to go; I had to convince them by telling it would be interesting to see student performers/composers. The first piece was called Oblique/musique composed by Patrick Swanson. This piece instantly stood out among the others because of the instruments involved. The piece was performed by two people: one playing a vibraphone and the other playing a large drum/cymbal/gong. However, the piece also contained prerecorded sounds of static, bass, and an incoherent voice. In this piece the melody was repeated many times. It was similar to the works of John Adams because of its repetitions, background recording, and minimalistic sounds. The second piece was a piano composition called something Afternoon; I didn’t really get the title. This piece had a very relaxing melody and a mild tempo. It was not fast and not slow. It was an experience of a lifetime. I listened to a genre of music I never had listened to. At the concert two people performed already leaving the audience wanting for more.
I also noticed that in the back of the auditorium there was a camera crew filming the whole performance. The auditorium

The 3rd work was mostly a dance, with the piano playing. It featured a crescendo in the beginning, and the harmony was polyphonic. The piano player and trumpet player begin playing at the end. The 4th work was called Three More Foxes. This piece was very easy to hear, and was highly syncopated. The composer stood in the front and conducted his piece at a fast tempo. It had accents at different levels, not an easy tune to hum to. It will suddenly get louder. The end is the loudest, towards the end becoming dissonance.…

The first piece was called Quintet in g minor, Op. 56, No. 2. It was by Franz Danzi. The first movement was an Allegretto. It was in a major mode and in triple meter. It started with polyphonic texture. The flute and oboe were playing a portion of the melody and the clarinet was playing another melody, both over the bassoon and horn. There were portions of the movement in which the flute would play a melody above the rest of the instruments in homophonic texture. This gave the piece a light, fluttering sound. The second movement was an Andante. It started with the horn and flute playing with monophonic texture. This created a calm sound that brought on a feeling warmth indoors on a cold winter night. It was in a minor mode and in triple meter. The middle of the movement included a great deal of dissonance and had an atonal rhythm that felt a bit unsettling. The end of the movement had the same calm melody as the beginning. It…

A full audience bustles into Mallory Hall on a rainy December afternoon with anticipation for the thrilling sounds of Nicholas Pappone (violin), Grace Mei-En Ho (cello), and Candace Chien (piano); all of whom are seasoned veterans of The Mallory Concert Series at Rutgers University: Camden. The expectation is obvious with the lack of seats available that the concert will be captivating. As the air turns to a silent empty hum, we are ready.…

Anna Dasom Schmitz’s Junior Recital was a very talented display on the piano. Her performance really showed her potential on the piano, especially considering it was only a junior recital. The overall nature of the concert was low-key compared to the last concert I attended, but it was still very composed and organized. Although the sound of the piano was only focus of the performance, it made things feel peaceful and unique, something I never felt at the previous concerts I attended.…

The second piece I wanted to pay attention to is “Take the A Train” that was originally composed by Billy Strayhorn. At the Sac State Jazz Combos Concert it was performed by Oliver Graham Combo band. It so happened that 2 days before this concert I read about Billy Strayhorn in my Music class and it was very interesting to listen how these guys would perform it. The composition starts with all instruments playing. Then pianist improvised first. After pianist, alto took turn to improvise. One could notice a very interesting and a little bit unusual exchange between guitarist…

I saw The Santa Fe Big Band 22nd, Annual Evening of Jazz Concert. The band was dressed up all matching. The men were wearing black dress shirts and pants, with dress shoes. Monique attended the Swing class at Ambient Studio on March 14, 2009 to heard and dance to the rhythms and sounds of the Etowah Jazz Society. The concert was from 9pm to 12 am in the morning. There look is like a big band but they have a swing feel to them. The bands whole persona is that of a big band that you would see on a dance television show back in the older days. There sound was very mellow and not loud at all. After Monique talked to a couple of the members in the band I found out that there influences on music where commonly set around the swing era, big band jazz, and Natalie Cole. The band is comprised of 18 members who all have different skill levels. When watching the band it looked as though the brass section was more skilled…

The first song I heard is Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture, composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. It is written at 1880, a romantic period music. It is a sonata allegro form, which consist an exposition, a development, and a recapitulation. However, it is hard for me to find connection between three parts when I was at the concert. Moreover, I did not realize there is three parts until I did the research after the concert. I was really into music and picturing the Romeo and Julia scene in my mind when I heard the symphony playing this piece.…

The second song was called, “Fly Me to the Moon,” which is written by Bart Howard and sung by Frank Sinatra. It is a Latin-inspired sounding consonance which set the romantic mood at the beginning of this song. A piano and saxophone then alternated the melody of the song as though they were dancing like two lovers flying to the moon. As the passion of the song heated up, the texture changed within the song as the saxophone took the melody and the piano and other instruments within the ensemble were in accompaniment. The rhythm, which was continuously steady, seemed to get faster like a heartbeat by the climax of the song. It was also at this point that…
