Moran Woodwind Symphony Analysis
The Moran Woodwind Quintet was on Tuesday, November 17. The performers included John Bailey, William McMullen, Diane Barger, Jeffrey McCray, and Alan Mattingly. Bailey played the flute, McMullen played the oboe, Barger was on the clarinet, McCray played the bassoon, and Mattingly played the horn. The first piece was called Quintet in g minor, Op. 56, No. 2. It was by Franz Danzi. The first movement was an Allegretto. It was in a major mode and in triple meter. It started with polyphonic texture. The flute and oboe were playing a portion of the melody and the clarinet was playing another melody, both over the bassoon and horn. There were portions of the movement in which the flute would play a melody above the rest of the instruments in homophonic texture. This gave the piece a light, fluttering sound. The second movement was an Andante. It started with the horn and flute playing with monophonic texture. This created a calm sound that brought on a feeling warmth indoors on a cold winter night. It was in a minor mode and in triple meter. The middle of the movement included a great deal of dissonance and had an atonal rhythm that felt a bit unsettling. The end of the movement had the same calm melody as the beginning. It …show more content…
It was in a minor mode and had a disjunct melody in the beginning. It started with an eerie sound as each instrument would start playing a melody and then pause until another instrument started again. Eventually, the oboe started building up a more complex flowing melody that all of the instruments joined. It felt like a wait for some sort of mysterious person or object to arrive. The horn came in with a melody over the bassoon, which created a deep sound that made for a hazy, mystical scene. The clarinet soon joined in with a clear, pure sound that brought on a calm feeling. The piece ended with all of the instruments joining together to create a

The first piece written by Lowell Liebermann, Sonata for Flute and Harp, Op. 56 was a vibrant piece music dealing mostly with chromaticism at its center. The harp slowly and gradually moves in a crescendo with an almost synonymous sound to a suspense movie. The flute on the other hand, acts as the amplifying instrument that amplifies the tension created by the harp. Similarly, David Kechley’s piece, Available Light: Midwinter Musings for Flute and Harp possesses almost the same characteristics as Liebermann’s piece with an exemption of a calm and soothing reflective 3rd movement, the Lyric Transformation. The 1st and 2nd movement, Frenetic Reflection and Cold Fusion desperately dives into an even more chromaticism while still…

The first piece was Intègrales by Edgard Varèse (1883-1965). Edgard Victor Achille Charles Varèse was a French-born composer who spent the greater part of his career in the United States. He was innovator in 20th-century techniques of sound production. According to the www.allmusic.com, his concept of "organized sound" led to many experiments in form and texture. He was constantly on the lookout for new sound sources, and was one of the first to extensively explore percussion, electronics, and taped sounds. Intègrales was composed in 1925. I think this piece is very modern, and is a work for wind, brass, and percussion. I am not really enjoying this piece because it is a little noisy for me. The second piece is Coptic Light, and the composer…

In Beethoven’s Symphony no. 5 in C minor the first movement is called Allergro con brio and it is in sonata form. This movement is very intense and strong sounding and has a single rhythmic motive that is short-short-short-long. The first theme of this movement is in C minor. Throughout this theme he shifts the motive to different pitches and instruments. The second theme is in E flat major and starts with a varied basic motive of short-short-short-long-long-long. The horns starts a new melody that is calm sounding compared to the opening of this movement. In this movement you can hear horns, some woodwind instruments and some string instruments. This movement has a dramatic climax and the closing section starts in C major and moves into C minor.…

Haydn composed his Op. 74 quartets in the later years of his life between 1796 and 1797 and it was the last of his completed string quartets. The set of quartets were dedicated to the Hungarian Count Joseph Erdödy and were published in 1799. It was said that this selection of quartets was one of his “most ambitious chamber works” with his attempt of “emphasizing thematic continuity, seamlessly and continually passing motifs from one instrument to another” 1. The fourth of these quartets is nicknamed “Sunrise”. This is due to the exquisite rising theme heard in the first violin part at the beginning of the first movement from bar one to bar four as seen in Figure 1.…

This exciting piece of music is being played by a large Romantic orchestra that includes piccolo, 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 7 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 4 saxophones, 4 horns, 3 trombones, baritone horn, tuba, timpani, percussion and strings. Between all the instruments being played, the dynamic is loud, but closest to the end the loudness increases. I really like how the composer uses all of these instruments for this stunning…

The piece preformed was Clarinet Quintet in b minor, OP. 115 by Johannes Brahms (1833-1897). The piece had four movements: Allegro, Adagio, Andantino, Con moto and because it was a quintet, there were five musicians. There were two violins, played by Gregory Maytan and Oleg Bezuglov. There was one viola and one cello, played respectively by Paul Swantek and Pablo Mahave-Veglia. The clarinet was played by Arthur Campbell.…

The first piece was Prelude and Fugue in A-flat major, WTC Book II by Johann Sebastian Bach. Prelude and Fugue in A-flat major started with a higher upbeat feel on the high end of the piano. To offset the high-end notes, lower trills were thrown in sparingly while maintaining around 90% high end melody. Tempo for the piece stayed a constant andante tempo…

Although it was not very clear I made the assumtion that the trumpets were playing with a firm staccato tone to match the mood of the song. This song is a polyphonic sound because it is clear multiple sounds are being heard all at the same time. The flutes with clarinets and wood winds in the background along with the main melody of the trumpets coming in strong, the low brass mocking the trumpets in a simpler form but in a repetitious melody, not to forget the percussion occasionally coming in with a variety of sound. For example, symbol crashing because towards the end it played an important role as the ending became evident the trumpets would play their notes in a measurement follow by the low brass mocking that same sound except in a deeper tone or pitch, as this was happening the music had a crescendo building up more and more forte. Accompanied by the symbol crashing all came together to make a powerful ending with all instruments playing in unision chord when the conductor gave the signal it all came to an end. The ending of this piece was an exciting moment, without noticing the music builds in crescendo when least expecting the song ends leaving behind a silence ring in the…
