Die Walküre-Richard Wagner: Music Analysis
First Selection: “Ride of the Valkyries” from Die Walküre- Richard Wagner (1813-1883)
First Hearing:
Drama, Active, Excitement
Second Hearing:
The composer wanted to create a memorable Leitmotifs. The music makes me think of a drama that I can picture many of the actions taking place just by listening to the music.
Third Hearing: This exciting piece of music is being played by a large Romantic orchestra that includes piccolo, 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 7 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 4 saxophones, 4 horns, 3 trombones, baritone horn, tuba, timpani, percussion and strings. Between all the instruments being played, the dynamic is loud, but closest to the end the loudness increases. I really like how the composer uses all of these instruments for this stunning

“ Nessun Dorma” from Turandot- Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924)
First Hearing:
Strong, very pretty, calm
Second Hearing:
The composer wrote this piece about a hero for his last opera comique. The song is very pretty that gives me a moment of calmness just by listening to it.
Third Hearing:
A Romantic orchestra is being played that guides a tenor voice singer and a chorus of female voices. I love how each of the instruments makes a very gentle sound that the voices of the singers flow together. The dynamics are very gentle until the very end of the song where the sound of the tenor voice and the instruments get very loud to close the song.
The rhythm has quadruple meter.
The tempo has a slow speed that speeds up until the middle of the song then slow down until the chorus sings. Afterward it speeds back up faster to end the song.
The tone color of the song is mellow that turns into a brighter color at the end.
The centerpiece has a two-part arias that has an ensemble in between the parts.
The melody is very smooth throughout the song until the instruments double of

It was in a minor mode and had a disjunct melody in the beginning. It started with an eerie sound as each instrument would start playing a melody and then pause until another instrument started again. Eventually, the oboe started building up a more complex flowing melody that all of the instruments joined. It felt like a wait for some sort of mysterious person or object to arrive. The horn came in with a melody over the bassoon, which created a deep sound that made for a hazy, mystical scene. The clarinet soon joined in with a clear, pure sound that brought on a calm feeling. The piece ended with all of the instruments joining together to create a…

I also noticed a little bit of polyphony in there when the chorus started to sing lower and then start to get higher around “He shall reign for ever and ever”. I believe where I detected it, along with the dynamics taking an effect. Then the around the ending the homorhythmic melody came back because of the settings from the trumpets and the timpani setting the mood to complete the performance. I also found out that this would be a SATB chorus, which is a 4-part chorus and…

The tempo was medium-paced, but fairly fast. The dynamics were exceedingly powerful and impactful towards the audience. Both of the male and female voices were equal in distribution and neither of the groups overpowered each other. The members of the choir performed with such aggressive vocals and displayed strong passion; their cheerful attitudes filled the atmosphere of the room. The last few minutes of the program were concluded with a compelling, effective ending.…

“Nocturne Op.27, No.2 in D-flat Major”, composed by Frédéric Chopin, attracted me since the performer pressed the first note on the piano. This music was passionate and sexy and displaced dialogue without using any words. It started with slow and soft motions as its exposition, and then it raised the speed up with instable and repeatable notes during the development stage, after that it went back to soft and slowly motion as its recapitulation. This piece reminded me of the theme song of Titanic, which presented a love story behind. Plus, the floating motion of the barge made me felt like part of the story. I found listening to this a worthwhile experience since I haven’t ever been to this kind of concert before. And it was a fantastic beginning to the bargemusic concert of my life.…

    Lark Ascending Analysis

To introduce the piece two cadenzas inspired by the same melody are performed over a continuous subtle harmony. The piece begins with sustained chords between the string instruments and wind instruments. This gives a relaxed effortless tone to the piece and resembles the calmness and tranquillity of a spring day in England. The violin then enters imitating the lark. The violin plays an ascending pattern with elongated arpeggios. The chords underneath drop out so the violin plays a solo introducing the first theme. The orchestra is quietly introduced and develops the almost folk like motif. A folk dance theme is then introduced led by the clarinet and flute and woodwinds as the solo cadenza is repeated. The full orchestra then comes in however it is still fairly restrained to imitate the English countryside. There is antiphonal exchange between the solo violin playing a trill and then the woodwinds imitating the bird like call. This is followed by the solo violin playing a series of cadenzas over the orchestra which could represent the lark flying over the countryside and rolling hills. The shorter cadenza for the soloist is fairly contrasting in comparison to the rest of the piece. There are two separate melodies competing with one another yet also mimicking each other. There is…

The first movement in this piece opened with a solo piano. The pianist played chords in a key which I am unfamiliar and then came to rest on a dominant chord. There was a pause for what seemed to be two or three beats and then the orchestra entered in what I made out to be B major. A theme is played by the orchestra in the continuing B major and then drops in pitch to another key, which I was unable to make out which one. Once again the theme is played, followed by a strong cadence. The music seems to fade into one bar. After some kind of accompaniment, the music changes to minor, and sounds pianissimo. There is a rise in the bass and more harmonies. There is a rise in the bass and more harmonies. A final cadence is heard, and then the beginning bars are heard again for closing.…
