CAD/CAM The term CAD/CAM means Computer-Aided Design and Computer-Aided Manufacturing. CAD is defined as the use of computer technology to design a part or a product, modify it and also analyze the engineering design. CAD has become popular as the use of the design software’s helps in lower product development costs and shortened design cycles. CAM is defined as the use of computer technology to manufacture or prototype product components with the help of computer numerical control (CNC). Selection of a CAD/CAM system helps in doing the jobs quickly with a greater accurate results and improves the quality of a job.

CLIENT DETAILS

The Client is a small tooling manufacturer based in Sheffield. The business of the Client is essentially the design, analysis and manufacture of tools for the molding of plastic bottles (various shapes and sizes). The Client receives orders from around twenty regular customers throughout the year, some of which use Solidworks, Pro/engineer, AutoCAD, Intergraph NX or 3D Studio Max.

In order to generate a 3D model, designs must start with sketches that are generated within the CAD program. One important difference between a freehand sketch and a CAD sketch is accuracy. By using numeric (dimensional) constraints a line may also be given precise length, placed a specific distance from another sketch feature, or constrained to be oriented at a specific angle from another straight line. By applying geometric constraints a line can be made perfectly horizontal or vertical. If more than one line is being sketched, they can be made perfectly parallel or perpendicular, collinear, or equal in length. Lines can be constrained to be tangent to circles or arcs, and two circles can be constrained to be concentric. In order to precisely model a part, the designer must be able to use dimensional and geometric constraints within the CAD program.…
