CAD/CAM
The term CAD/CAM means Computer-Aided Design and Computer-Aided Manufacturing. CAD is defined as the use of computer technology to design a part or a product, modify it and also analyze the engineering design. CAD has become popular as the use of the design software’s helps in lower product development costs and shortened design cycles. CAM is defined as the use of computer technology to manufacture or prototype product components with the help of computer numerical control (CNC).

Selection of a CAD/CAM system helps in doing the jobs quickly with a greater accurate results and improves the quality of a job.

CLIENT DETAILS

The Client is a small tooling manufacturer based in Sheffield. The business of the Client is essentially the design, analysis and manufacture of tools for the molding of plastic bottles (various shapes and sizes). The Client receives orders from around twenty regular customers throughout the year, some of which use Solidworks, Pro/engineer, AutoCAD, Intergraph NX or 3D Studio Max.

OBJECTIVE

To select a CAD/CAM system which is suitable for client details?

Pro/Engineer is the standard in 3D product design, featuring industry leading productivity tools that promote best practices in design while ensuring compliance with industry and company standards. Integrated, parametric, 3D CAD/CAM/CAE solutions allow to design faster than ever, while maximizing and quality to ultimately create exceptional products.\

BENEFITS:

✓ Powerful, parametric design capabilities allow superior product differentiation and manufacturability ✓ Fully integrated applications allow you to develop everything from concept to manufacturing within one application ✓ Automatic propagation of design changes to all downstream deliverables allow to design with confidence ✓ Complete virtual simulation capabilities enables to improve product performance and exceed product quality goals ✓ Automated generation of associative tooling design and manufacturing deliverables

Q1: CAD FUNCTIONALITY

➢ Does the software price include file translators?

In Pro/Engineer the software price includes file translators. Few functions of Pro/Engineer are explained which provides for translating Pro/Engineer data into compatible formats that can be used by other CAD systems. It always automatically tailors Save a Copy command to offer formats applicable like 2D data for drawing mode and 3D data for part mode and assembly mode. File translators are used to import diagrams/parametric models from other CAD software’s. File translators should be found out for ACIS solid, Para solid, ASCII, CADL, DWG.

➢ What entity types can it create, import, and export?

Import: Data from file

Pro/Engineer creates a single feature of all data called an “import feature”. Import features may be redefined as necessary to adjust the data created during the import process. When a model is imported into assembly mode, Pro/engineer creates a new component and creates as import feature in the new component.

Export: Save a Copy

To export model data, it uses the file and save a copy command, selects the applicable format type, specify a name and set applicable options necessary.

➢ Is it easy to modify geometric entities?

Pro/Engineer are composed of parameters which include parametric dimensions, extrude depth and material side. Parameters such as these are established during feature construction. The feature parameters and other feature definitions such as sections sketch and sketch plane can be modified later in the part modeling process.

✓ Dimension modification

Parametric dimensions are dimensions that are used to define a feature. They can be modified at any time. Modifying a dimension value is the most common dimension modification function, but other...
