Introduction
Understanding the development of the sciences, including the health and social sciences, requires a multidisciplinary approach as they often share ideas and methods that are trailed, tested, rejected or promoted depending on the prevalent social, political and economic climate of the time. As such, the development of the public health and community psychology approaches is intertwined and many parallels can be drawn between them. This essay seeks to compare the similarities and differences between how they view diseases and treatment and how they supplement each other. Historical development

Research into community-based prevention in the U.S. flourished under President Kennedy and Carter, but floundered under President Reagan.

In South Africa, the

groundbreaking work done at Pholela in the 1940s was stifled by the National Party’s “…more restrictive apartheid policies” (Yach & Tollman, 1993, p. 1045). Both approaches
