Comparing Giovanni's Poems, Good Books, And I Am Glass
In the poems “women” ,”Good books” and “I am glass” they all use strong imagery ,vivid words, personification and other figurative language to paint a picture on how the author was thinking when she wrote the poems. The way everything is explained shows a clear representation in your mind to understand what is being talked about. You can also tell that the author has a joy for writing because Giovanni writes there is a passion and her poems always have to be read between the lines. In “good books” the poem tells a story of a young child who talks about himself /herself wanting to be a book when there older and as the poem progresses the type of book that young child wants to be changes. The last poem “women” is about a woman who had a man who wasn't there for her but then she realizes that she can be independent with out a man. In the poems “good books”, ‘I am glass” and “woman” they all use imagery. For example in “I am glass” they use words like “you can see through me, I am easily hurt” which gives me an image of someone who is in pain and in distress. Another example of imagery was in ‘good books” where is said “a blue sky with white fluffy clouds and lots of pretty flowers” which makes me think of a nice peaceful day in mid spring and the tone of the day would be calm. The final example of imagery was in “woman” they use words like “she tries to be a book but he wouldn't read” which gives me a image of a women trying to peruse something but needing guidance from her partner , but him not being there for her. There was a lot of figurative language in the three poems that I

In today's modern view, poetry has become more than just paragraphs that rhyme at the end of each sentence. If the reader has an open mind and the ability to read in between the lines, they discover more than they have bargained for. Some poems might have stories of suffering or abuse, while others contain happy times and great joy. Regardless of what the poems contains, all poems display an expression. That very moment when the writer begins his mental journey with that pen and paper is where all feelings are let out. As poetry is continues to be written, the reader begins to see patterns within each poem. On the other hand, poems have nothing at all in common with one another. A good example of this is in two poems by a famous writer by the name of Langston Hughes. A well-known writer that still gets credit today for pomes like " Theme for English B" and "Let American be American Again."…

It uses vivid images to illustrate points about the opinion of the actions seen. For example, the image of the maiden white as marble can be compared to the dead roe deer wrapped in white rushes. This observational approach seems that author is seeing this happen. With that in mind, the poem appears to be writing in first person, and the maiden and her seducer actions are the main focus of the poem.…

For me personally a text that has had a profound effect upon my understanding of the global village is the film The Castle. Poetry is different from fiction literature because of the detail within it. Poetry explains more by corresponding emotion and detail rather than ordinary language. Poetry delivers emotion and thought deliberately because it is made to do so. When reading poetry it is important to read to hear the sounds because it is meant to be heard. Interpreting the true meaning within a poem can be challenging because poetry uses intense figurative language and symbolism. Figurative language helps the reader know the mood of the scene in a poem. One of the most important types of figurative language is Allegory. Allegory can be referred to as the second meaning of a word or phrase in a poem. It can also be referred to as an extended metaphor because it the word or phrase goes beyond the surface of thought. In poetry, the average word has two component parts: denotation and connotation. Denotation is the dictionary meaning of the word while connotations are what the word suggests or what it expresses. For instance, the denotation of the word happy can be referred to as the act of happiness but the connotation of the word happy varies within different individuals because different things make individuals happy. Another important aspect of poetry is imagery. Imagery can be defined as the representation through language of sense experience. Because poetry appeals directly to the readers senses, imagery is key to a successful poem.…

    Poetry and Schizophrenia

Poetry is one of the oldest arts. Poems come in many forms from songs, ballads, and epics, to haikus. Many poets use elements like similes, metaphors, personification, rhymes, and imagery to get their themes or meanings across to the reader. In the poem “Schizophrenia”, Jim Stevens uses personification of the house to give the poem its overall meaning. Personification and symbolism are the most important poetic elements to “Schizophrenia” because they are used to describe how the house can never be the same after the effects of schizophrenia and how the house personifies and symbolizes a family and the person with schizophrenia.…

The three poems that I am going to discuss are: The Landlady, Rat Song and Song of the Worms. All three of these poems use strong imagery to show Margaret Atwood's view of the way that women are treated. She uses several tones in her poems, the tone that she generally uses for these three poems are frustration and anger. Another thing that she likes to use is a run on style of poetry, which allows for the readers emotions to carry on to the next line all the way to the end of the story. Almost all of her poems are free verse, I could not find any rhythmic or rhyming devices used in any of them. She likes to use symbolisms to get her point out, and when she uses them they are…

“ Poetry is language at its most distilled and most powerful.” - Rita Dove. Poems are like fingerprints. All poems are completely unique and different, but yet they are all the same. All poems consist of something their writers are passionate about, much like how fingerprints are completely unique, but the entire human race has one. Most poems could also have double meanings. For instance, the poem “ Fire - Caught ” by Langston Hughes could have multiple meanings, like someone giving into temptation, the actual connection of a moth and a fire, or it could be a telling story about someone falling for something too good to be true.…

In the last stanza Giovanni tells us why she loves books: through our fingertips we can use books to access another world of knowledge, creativity, fun, magic, and imagination. Giovanni makes this other world seem pretty exciting and full of childhood fantasy. In fact, reading this poem makes me want to drop everything I am currently doing and read my book. If this was the main purpose of the poem to reader than she has succeeded on me. The image of the smiling librarian, the old floor creaking, and the heavy oak chairs- it all adds up to a great image of an inviting library where we are all explorers in the field of learning and selection of books. And all…
