Kevin Conroy once said, “Everyone is handed adversity in life. No one’s journey is easy. It’s how they handle it that makes people unique.” Dictionary.com defines adversity as “adversity n. adverse or unfavorable fortune or fate; a condition marked by misfortune, calamity, or distress.” Adversity is something that everyone will experience at some point in his life; however, some people face greater adversities than others. Morrie Schwartz and Elie Wiesel are two men that faced two of the greatest adversities that this world knows. Elie is a survivor of Adolf Hitler’s destruction of the Holocaust, and Morrie Schwartz was a simple man who lost a battle to Lou Gehrig’s disease, or ALS. Both of these men’s lives have been captured in best-selling…

One similarity between the two texts is that both are about strong, powerful, and brave women. In the article about Malala it says “She started the Malala Fund to bring awareness to the social and economic impact of girl’s education and to empower girls to raise their voices, to unlock their potential, and to demand change.” This quote tells us that Malala wanted to start something even more powerful than just her speaking out so she made a website so other girls can see what she’s done and be inspired by it. In the Barbara Frietchie poem, the line “A shade of sadness, a blush of shame, over the face of the leader came.” This is showing that from what she did by reaching for the flag out the window made the Stonewall Jackson feel a little ashamed when he shot her since she dies trying to protect her country’s…

“Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant.” What the Roman poet Horace was saying was that when there is an obstacle in our way, our true colors will radiate. I could not agree more. When we as human beings feel passionate about achieving a goal, we may learn something new of ourselves, maybe a new trait that we did not know we possessed, when we reach new heights we did not know we could push ourselves towards. Challenges are similar to tests. Challenges are faced every day, but how we respond to them determines how strong we really are. Prime examples are superheroes and students that move dramatically.…

L.M. Montgomery once said, “...we pay the price for everything we get or take in this world”. What he is trying to say is that we have to face the consequences for the choices we make. There is always a result from everything that happens, giving or taking, will result in something else. I agree with his philosophy, mainly because it speaks pure truth about how most things are run in the common society that we as human beings live in. Two pieces of literature that best support this quote are “A Raisin in the Sun” by Lorraine Hansberry, and “Lord of the Flies” by William Golding.…

These two stories have to do with a great deal of racism and ignorance within American culture along with culture around the world. To give a quick overview into the two books The Bluest Eye takes place during the 1940’s during a time of great racism and hatred toward African-American and minority culture as a whole. To make matters even worse there is racism within cultures which plays a major role in the story. While A Stranger in the Village written in 1955 depicts an African-American man moving into a village in Switzerland where some of the villagers have never seen a person of color before. This short story shows more of a culture to culture hatred and displays that many cultures were built on racism and White’s being the superior race. In these two stories Both Toni Morrison author of The Bluest Eye and James Baldwin author of A stranger in the Village have similar but different beliefs on racism in the world. Morrison talks about how racism doesn’t only happen outside, but also within one’s culture. While Baldwin talks more about how racism shaped many cultures and how this world is no longer white, and it will never be white again.…
