INTRODUCTION
As a public relations practitioner it is vital that we understand the importance of communication. We need to find out the
reasons why people become members of groups and what
roles exist within small groups. There are also certain factors that affects they group working. In order to communicate
accurately and effectively we must determine what qualities a good communicator has to have. It is important to take into
account certain factors that could cause a breakdown with in organisations communication channels. This can be from poor
listening to prejudice.

1 GROUPS
1.1. Reasons for joining a group
Human beings will join groups intentionally and unintentionally. As an organisation it is important to establish why people want to join groups. As individuals we have various needs that has to be satisfied. These are:



Power - Numbers brings power. When an individual
joins a group the outcome of a certain situation is
sometimes more effective due to group support on a
specific topic. People feel that they have more power as
a group than as an individual trying to achieve
something by themselves.



Identity – In a group we learn about who we are. We get
to know ourselves better because of the feedback we
get from other members in a group.



Affiliation – Humans do not like being alone. By joining
a group we ensure that we have regular company. This
affiliation can come from similar interest or merely
working in a specific department in an organisation



Security – This is most probably the strongest factor
driving the need to join a group. We feel safe in
numbers and it brings a sense of certainty. When it
comes to the business environment, a group can give
security when it comes to working out problems and
relating to other members experiences.
