The Winter War erupted on 30 November 1939, when Stalin unleashed his Red Army in an all-out assault against Finland. In August that year Stalin and Hitler had divided Eastern Europe between their two countries in the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact officially known as the Nazi-Soviet Non-Aggression Pact of August 1939, hereafter known as The Pact, putting Finland in the Soviet sphere of influence. During the fall, Stalin demanded that Finland cede key parts of the country to the USSR. When Finland refused to meet all his demands Stalin waged war between the giant Soviet Union and the microscopic Finland ( Ries). The war ended with the Peace of Moscow. A breakdown of the war follows including the causes, Finland and the USSR’s…

The wind band is a tradition that began with American bandmaster John Phillip Sousa. Ever since its creation, the wind band has been a tradition and a staple in the American marching bands. Beginning as early as the Civil War, the armies of the American military would march to the beat of these wind bands, and the tradition would continue for many years to come, including the U.S. Marine Band, of which Sousa was the bandmaster. It was not only relevant to military marching, but also recreationally as an enjoyment to the active servicemen.…

I am extremely sad that color guard season is over. Even though there is a winter guard, I’m not doing it this year. On Tuesday, the entire band went to all the elementary schools and also the middle school to end the season. I have never been to Forest Hunt, and I was surprised how small the gym was. I really enjoyed going back to Harris and seeing my favorite teacher, Mr. Wallace. I’m going to miss all the seniors who graduate this year. Next year will not be the…
Winter is a very cold time in Canada with harsh weather that forces many people indoors while a few practice winter sports. Low temperatures are caused by the oblique angle of the earth in relation to the sun. Like in summer, there are different kinds of precipitation that can be difficult to endure. These include snow, ice storms and freezing rain with very sharp, cold winds. It can be beautiful when the sun shines on the freshly fallen snow and ice glistens in the trees. Many people hide inside and do only indoor activities. Others take winter vacations in the southern United States or the Caribbean. Some Canadians, however, like to get outside to ski,…
In the indoor setting, competition has changed throughout its history. Sight reading was implemented to insure that fundamentals were being taught and that bands were not just practicing concert pieces all year. When it comes to competition in marching bands or other extracurricular bands, the achievements seem to be a little more extrinsically based.…

The need for personal cleanliness, safety, and proper wear of the uniform on the part of all members requires that certain minimum standards be established. Uniforms must be kept clean, neat, correct in design and specification, and in good condition.…
