College Algebra Class
Prior to this College Algebra class, I have taken algebra 1, algebra 2, geometry, and precalculus. These math classes have allowed me to gain skills and knowledge that I may apply in your class.I learned the concept of factoring in algebra 1. Factoring was a concept that I struggled to understand. It took me several minutes to determine each factor as I was not given a specific way to do it. However, in my sophomore year of highschool, I was given certain rules and “tricks” to solve equations that must be factored. This has helped me in in section 2.3 of college algebra because I am now able to factor more quickly. Another skill I have acquired prior to this class is completing the square. I learned this concept in algebra 2, however, it …show more content…
Because I have already learned many of the concepts that we have covered in class, I am able to practice more questions rather than trying to figure out how to solve it. Also, I learned how to manage my time more efficiently as I study for many classes in a certain time span. This allows me to cover many other subjects and review lessons from other classes. Although I already knew how to complete the square, I learned a step-by-step way to actually solve it which allows me to practice efficiently. Time management and efficient studying are important skills that I can use when I actually go to college. This will help me do better in college classes and also allow me to study for more classes in one day. Furthermore, I also learned how to solve absolute value equations and inequalities. I did not know any of the basic rules of solving an absolute value equation and I am still trying to understand each rule. I also have to always remember that when solving an absolute value equation, there might be a rule that applies to it. In conclusion, I have obtained and applied many skills in this college algebra class which allows me to improve and increase my knowledge. I am able to perform many skills in which I can use in future classes. I can also use my non-math skills in other classes to improve my knowledge in

If I could add a step that might make it easier or easier for me to understand, that step would be to factor the radical expression. This would help me to visualize on paper rather than in my head what the largest perfect nth power factor of the radicand might be. I find that for me, it is easier to solve or simplify something if I have a visual or example in front of me, as I am a hands on learner.…

Every day, millions of high school and college students have to struggle through algebra in order to graduate. Having the ability to do mathematical equations will always be an important skill to have, but honestly, if you can’t solve ([3x - 3x^2 +1] ^744) x ([- 3x + 3x^2 +1] ^745) it doesn’t mean you won’t be successful in life. All it means is that you probably weren’t the best algebra 2 student in high school. “…One in four ninth graders fails to finish high school.” (Hacker, 2) Andrew Hacker, a professor of political science at Queens College in New York and co-author of “Higher Education? How Colleges Are Wasting Our Money and Failing Our Kids - and What We Can Do About It.”, states the reason may be the algebra 2 courses we are forced to take.…

I tried staying after school to ask my teacher for help and every time he would say he was busy or he would tell to ask the students in my class, so I tried asking other math teachers for help and they couldn't even understand the way my teacher was teaching. I ended up going to a math tutor, three times a week Tony from Mathnasium would help me with my homework and help me prepare for tests for many hours.…

As 21st Century learners, students in my math classes will not only learn formulas for solving math problems, but they will also learn how to find those formulas and develop critical thinking and problem solving strategies using technology made available to them through our school district. Every student will be given the opportunity to use technological resources such as calculators, overhead projection systems, Smart boards, and computer programs, including but not limited to, interactive and math resource internet sites such as Algebra.com and CoolMath.com. These sites are excellent resources for math students - enabling them to fine tune their computation skills and assist them in correctly identifying and working with various mathematical formulas.…
