A set is a collection of objects. The objects in a set are called the elements of the set. A set of numbers is simply a listing, within braces {}. For example, the set of numbers used for counting can be represented as S = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, . . .}. The braces…

The problem 46 on page 240 in the text book, Elementary and Intermediate Algebra asks that I evaluate an inequality equation that can satisfy the Ozark Company needs. (Dugopolski, M. 2012 )The paragraphs ask for an inequality that can allow the company to use 3000 board feet of maple lumber. Of the 3000 board feet of lumber, the company will need 15 board feet to make classic rockers, and 12 board feet to make modern rockers. Therefore the inequality equation will equal to: 12x + 15y ≤ 3000. The company wants to see if how many classic or modern rockers they can manufacture with 3000 feet of maple lumber.…

Algebra is the building block that is used in advanced math, for instance, statistics, calculus and may be useful in physics and chemistry. Algebra can be used in our daily life and we are often oblivious to this fact, therefore, having a basic knowledge of algebra is a must. However, algebra is not an easy subject to master and students must practices daily for them to understand the topic. Even though 8th graders learn algebra for about 9 months, this is not nearly enough for students to completely master the subject. Since students are only mastering some topics of algebra, educators must have the qualifications that are suited to instruct algebra for students to be able to comprehend the material.…
When looking back on Math 297, I am reminded of the first time I heard mention of the course in Math 157 by Shari Dorsey. Shari was sharing with the class that in the fall a special topics class was going to be available, the topic being instruction in the middle years. I was so eager to sign up for the course that I emailed the instructor, Margaret Kinzel, immediately requesting a permission number. The eagerness to secure myself a position in this course stems from a desire to have as thorough an understanding of the principles of middle school math as possible when I graduate because my goal is to be a Middle School Mathematics Educator.…
During week three I discussed the 8th grade math curriculum. All eight graders in the state of North Carolina are expected to follow the same standard course of study in the same order. My district adopted a new middle school math program. Some schools in the district continued to follow the curriculum as required by the state and embed practices and activities from this new math program within the lessons. Other schools, like my middle school, elected to followed the math program as it was written which is not in the order of the state’s math curriculum guide. The teachers at my school had no input regarding the decision to implement the program, it was a decision made by the principal. The principal, who had an English background, made the decision without asking for input from any math teachers.…
