College Admissions Essay: What Makes A Leader?
What makes a leader? Is it someone who stands on a hill giving instructions, or someone who sits by your side and guides you to a solution? Can a leader be someone who works hard and in the process shows others that their goals are attainable. There are many ways to be a leader, but society likes to stifle the notion that if your role within a grander picture is not unlike that of a captain who grips the wheel of their ship while barking orders at their crew than you must be a crew member. The belief, that if you do not have absolute influence than you have no way of making a change, is dangerous. It tramples the creative foresight of people the world over; people who could have made significant improvements in their community, in their country, and in our world. I’m a leader because I’ve shown others around me if you work hard enough even a poor boy raised by a single mother can be afforded opportunities he would never have received otherwise. A leader needs perspective. It’s easy to shy away from the fact that there are people in our communities who need help. People who need food to feed their families when they cannot afford it, and affordable …show more content…
I’m pursuing computer science because I find great joy in it, but I also see opportunity. There have to be better ways to utilize computers to help people than there is today. I intend to find these methods. Very few people are thinking of computers in relation to how they can have profound positive effects on people’s lives. I’m not talking about putting pizza at the touch of a button, I’m talking about computers that learn to recognize depression in their users, or teach kids any topic they want to learn in the way they learn best. I’m going to show people that software development can be more than a for-profit practice. I’ve been leading by example my whole life, and there’s no reason to believe that’s going to change when I leave the lab

A dictionary definition of a leader is a guiding hand in a movement or group. My definition of a leader is someone who stands out amongst the rest and steps up to the task and helps the “followers” advance and strive to become a leader as well. The only way a leader can be effective is by leading by example. A prime example of this is Malala Yousafzai. She was shot in the face for trying to go to school. If she hadn’t gone to school she wouldn’t have been shot, but she also wouldn’t have a Nobel Peace prize. She is now using her story to speak for access to education for everyone. A leader is someone who leads by example and uses their skills to help others succeed.…

The dictionary defines a leader as someone who leads. This definition in not helpful for anyone wanting to become a leader themselves because a leader is so much more than someone who leads. A leader has great virtues that allow them to obtain the trust of others. Through leadership experiences, one will learn the qualities needed to be a leader. In my opinion, leadership is more than just someone who can enlist the aid of others to accomplish a specific task. It is a characteristic and a lifestyle of a person. True leadership is not displayed on days we feel like it. It is a constant display of ones actions to accomplish tasks and set an example for others to emulate. A leader is someone who can be turned to in the absence of knowledge or direction and will either have the answer or know where to get the answer.…

Being a leader is a real skill that requires time, commitment, thought and dedication. According to Pearson (2015), “Leaders are people with the ability to rule, guide, or inspire others to think or act as they recommend” (p. 2489). At times it may seem very overwhelming and situations may feel as if they are unsolvable and desired outcomes are unattainable; however, if you portray the unique characteristics of a leader it will help you overcome stressful tasks with ease and confidence.…

What does leadership mean and what does it mean to be a leader? Is it in the title that one might hold...Vice President, Commander, Chief Executive Officer, etc.? I think being a leader is more than just having a title. Don't get me wrong, having a title is important but it doesn't hold much value when it comes to one leading. I believe a true leader is not a persons that has been awarded, appointed or assigned to a position, but someone that has earned it through influencing others. There have been some great leaders who never held a high position such as, Martin Luther King Jr. He led a mass of people on the March of Washington, when he delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech without holding a title. Martin Luther King Jr. is a good example…

In my own definition, leadership is an attitude, not a position or routine, and not based on one certain formula or method. It is based on one’s experiences and personal values, and therefore no two leaders will never be the same. There are only a few characteristics that categorize them together. Leaders are those whose actions reflect their heart. They inspire themselves and others in a way that creates a chain reaction of positive events, thoughts, changes, and of course, attitudes. Whether their attitude affects a whole society or one single person, they are a leader because they genuinely care for the well-being of others and live according to their own principles. Most importantly, a leader is one who does not settle. They are always striving to grow as an individual, learn more, accomplish more, and challenge the norm.…
