I am a student who feels that the college I am applying to is the perfect college for me. Entering my senior year of high school, I realized how independent I have become and what kind of student and person I am. The experiences of having my first job during this summer made me realize that through new experiences you can learn so much. I also realized that having a job for the first time may not be the most exciting time of my life, but I definitely learned a lot about working and being more independent.

I was hired as a Porter for an apartment building. The first day I was nervous and didn’t know a lot about what a Porter does in an apartment building. Luckily, my coworkers were nice enough to explain to me what I was going to be doing this summer. I learned so much from my first job and I enjoyed working in that building, but the first week wasn’t so easy. I made a few mistakes my first couple of days. But I learned from the mistakes I made and I got into a good routine of knowing my schedule better. I worked forty hours a week and I earned a lot of money but I also had a lot of new experiences. I learned how to manage the elevator controls from the front desk, how to mop the floors, how to polish the windows, how to paint and many other things I learned while working this summer.

I am a pretty quiet person, but working helped me open up and helped me learn to communicate with new people I met. Working also taught me that I will always have to work hard in life. I consider this a good thing. It’s what makes life interesting, It made me realize that if I don’t have things I want to achieve in life, then life can get pretty boring and trying new things and opening yourself up to new experiences helps you learn more about yourself and what you like to do. I think a great metaphor for life in general is “We keep on climbing but we never find the top” from the song “Shelter Two” by the Evens. I believe having obstacles in life makes you a stronger and a

My uncle offered me a job at a factory called Carriage House Incorporated. He also added in the fact that the pay wage was high. I was eager to start my adult life and work full-time, so I took the offer. The work was hard labor, not really worth the money after all. I would get paid and work so much that I didn’t have time to enjoy the money I had worked for. As the years went by I became worn down and bored with the everyday routine.…

Claude Brown was born in 1937 and raised in Harlem--that district of Manhattan north of Central Park between Eighth Avenue and the East and Harlem rivers. His parents had moved up from South Carolina in 1935 and settled in a tenement at 146th Street and Eighth Avenue. Included in the family were two girls, Carole and Margie, and two boys, Claude and Pimp. The Browns were among the first of the waves of black migrants who left sharecropping farms in the South to come to the urban North. To these people, moving to the North meant a better life--a life in the "promised land." Claude--or Sonny, as he was called by his family and friends--spent his preschool days battling other boys in the streets of Harlem. He was encouraged to do so by the lifestyles of the street people. He was adopted as a mascot for an infamous Harlem bebop gang, the Buccaneers, and later became a member of its stealing division, the Forty Thieves. By the time he was ten years old, he had been in and out of New York's Children Centers and had been expelled from school several times. His parents reacted in two ways: His father tried to beat him into changing, and his mother pleaded with him, believing that Claude had been "born with the devil in him." Hoping that Claude would do better away from New York, his family sent him to live with his grandparents in South Carolina. During…

In a society filled with wants and needs, advertisement serves as a persuasive yet informative factor while aiming for an appealing effect on the potential consumer, Advertisement’s influential role on the consumer has provided a reliable resource for successful sales, while simultaneously creating a more competitive environment for opposing companies. For example, Rimmel London and Cover Girl, two extremely successful makeup industries are at constant war in advertising. When selling similar products, such as make up, brands are completely reliant on their advertisement’s approach. In all reality, both products may have the same effect but must rely on their commercial’s “pitch” to sell. If not marketed properly, even the best products can be overshadowed. Despite their widely different approach, both Rimmel London and Cover Girl understand the core elements of successful advertisement.…

Summer 2008 I began college as a freshman looking forward to all the new thing that I was going to be learning and also looking forward to all the new people I was going to be meeting. Overall I was overly excited about the new environment. It made me feel a sense of independence that I had never felt before. I was out there on my own and I was ready to make great things happen. Beginning as a freshman I had so many things that I wanted to accomplish. I wanted to become a dental hygienist, a cosmetologist, a pharmacy technician, a nurse and a wardrobe stylist. I knew that if I worked hard I could accomplish and achieve being anything that I wanted. As semesters rolled onward I began to accomplish things that I wanted: pharmacy technician, accomplished; associates degree, accomplished; cosmetologist, accomplished; certified nursing assistant, accomplished. I achieved so many great things but I still wanted more. I felt that there was more out there for me to achieve and I wanted to have it all. If there was more to be learned, I wanted to learn it and be a part of it. With that being said, I worked and I strived for more great things.…
