COM/600 - information SKILLS FOR GRADUATE STUDY

Learning teams consist of a small number of students grouped together, and working together on assignments during the duration of the course. According to University of Phoenix, Inc. (2006-2013), “By relying on others and having others rely on you, you will grow your collaborative skills”. This team encourages successful performance results, but successful performance can be hindered if team members do not equally contribute and work together. A collaborative team environment is the key for the complete success of the team. A collaborative environment can be created if team members do the following; creating a team charter, discussions within the team, positive information, and equally take responsibility for portions of assignments. As a team, we shall address value of team collaboration as part of the Learning Team model.

Address how team collaboration adds value to achieving success in the development of academic projects.
Team collaboration adds value to achieving success for the entire group because each member is working together towards a common goal. Without having a "common goal", the team cannot be successful. "Once general goals are in place" the team members can develop an educational strategy for assigned projects. Along with collaborating with one another, team members must trust each other to work together efficiently. Team members come from all sorts of backgrounds and have many different life experiences, which can create different perspectives when collaborating on educational projects. Team diversity is the beauty of learning teams; by generating various style of learning; ways of communicating, ideas and learned information over the years. A team member can be stronger in areas that his or her team members is not, and can help other team members strengthen their

The case “Teamwork Turmoil,” (by Hodge, Jenkins and Isabella (2007), shows how teamwork can be inefficient if one of the members of the team does not contribute. Tony Marshall, the second year business school mentor, created this learning team to primarily give students a chance to work outside of the class. In this case the learning team is self-managed, but lacks a team leader. By appointing a leader/project manager to the group in the case, the project manager can make an agenda, arrange meetings, and help each team member reach their individual goals efficiently. In this team, there is no team leader and members are afraid to discuss the issue faced by the team. Therefore, the key issue of this team is the lack of a project manager who can make sure that the team stays focused, has good communication skills, and reaches their end result efficiently. The project manager will also be able to speak with the team member who does not contribute.…

In my opinion, the most important factor that aids a team to work effectively is to have an established goal that each member works toward. When each individual is aware of the direction of team, they can consistently contribute their ideas and insights to achieve that goal. Therefore, my primary objective in this course is to actively seek the best ways to achieve the goal at hand. Once a certain goal has been established, I need to remind myself and my team members of that same goal in an on-going basis; so that the team won’t diverge from the direction it must be headed. By continually mentioning the goal that was agreed-upon, it keeps the team moving together which is vital to success. Each member must know how far the team has developed their steps to achieving the goal; therefore it would be a real disadvantage when one member is behind. Also, the most fundamental attribute that must go with teamwork collaboration is team cohesiveness and a high level of commitment. Without working together and committing to one another, a team will most likely fail. Each member must trust one another and agree that each individual will give them the same level of dedication as one another. My goal is to give my team members all that I can offer and hopefully, learn as much as I can from them to enhance the results. In order to reach this goal, I have to actively listen to my team members and see what they have to offer. Teamwork is about giving what you have and learning what you…

Specific experiences that allowed me to learn more about myself and working as a team during this semester will be identified and described. The most informative was taking part in the team formation process for the team presentation. For the team presentation, the team members spent a lot of time and effort working together. In the beginning, the team was very disorderly and chaotic; the members were confused about what they should do and how they should do it. During the first two meetings, we were always in disagreement and each team member insisted that their own opinion was the way to go. After two group meetings, we gradually came to consensus in some aspects including deciding our sub-tasks and allocating them to each member, deciding each members’ deadline and the arrangement for the team presentation. Since then, the team has been run in a smooth fashion and team members have followed their instructions to fulfil each task respectively, and negotiated with fellow team members when necessary.…

Groups can be defined in terms of perception, motivation, organization, interdependencies and interactions. In terms of interaction it can be defined as two or more persons who interact with one another such that each person influences and is influenced by each other person. The concept of interaction is essential to this definition. Two people who are physically together don't form a group unless they interact with each other. Coworkers may work side by side on related tasks, but if they don't interact they are not a group. The presence of others may influence the performance of a group, but they don't become the part of the group unless interaction occurs.…

Examining the importance of workplace diversity in an organization and relating it to the team dynamic is something all business should engage in. Many leadership courses in the corporate world focus on the importance of team building, not group building. The web defines a group as any number of entities considered as a unit. In many instances it is much easier to form a group than it is to form a team. Forming a group is not particularly difficult when using qualifiers to ascertain commonalities like experience, gender, age, or field of expertise, but the effectiveness of the group contains more variables. Results are the determining factor when considering the success or failure of a group, not the process the group uses to arrive at those results. Groups use peer pressure, discussion, and argument to guide individuals toward a consensus. In America’s legal system, trial by a jury is a perfect example of the group dynamic in action. The leadership role the foreperson plays attempts to turn 11 different views, opinions, and perceptions into one unanimous decision. Jury members usually do not know each other prior to a trial, so there is usually little effort put forth to build a team dynamic. A jury must use group cooperation to reach consensus and produce a verdict.…
