Cognitive Aging
Today, people have mixed feelings about technology’s role in society. One survey conducted through various forms of social media found that 68 percent of people believe that today’s society relies too much on technology (personal communication, March 29, 2017). However, everything from a simple pen to the latest iPhone are all some form of technology. Technology has grown exponentially in the past 100 years. For example, doctors are now able to diagnose a patient’s condition using video calling and teachers are now using the latest technology to help educate the future generations. However, this new technology must be used in moderation. Abuse of this growing world of technology could lead to cyberbullying and other forms of harm that were …show more content…
Getting older is a time of social, emotional, mental, and physical change. Retirement might change how a person interacts socially every day, affecting a person’s mood and well-being. Cognitive aging—the normal process of cognitive change as a person gets older—can begin, or a permanent change in physical function may arise. Technology offers a path for people who are navigating these changes potentially to prevent or minimize the risks associated with them and to enhance people’s ability to live their lives fully. The world will keep advancing on the same technological path; therefore, students must be surrounded by the growing advancements in technology to be successful in the workplace. In the social media survey (personal communication, March 29, 2017), 93 percent of respondents said that technology based learning is beneficial to schools. However, this technology is not to replace teachers themselves. The technology should only be used to teach students the tools used in jobs. For example, the use of PowerPoint for presentations or Excel for spreadsheets in labs will all be useful when working in the field. Technology in education can be a great tool if used properly and effectively. The final benefit of technology would be in the workplace. Robots are becoming more and more popular among jobs today. Robots used to be caged off because of the dangers they posed. However, Eisenberg (2013) contradicts this by stating that calmer industrial machines, created to work and play with people, are coming out from behind their shielding barriers to work shoulder-to-shoulder with humans (“Freed from its Cage”). What once used to be a feared machine is now a friendly robot who is working among people and helping to make jobs more efficient and less

Chapter 13 of They Say I Say by Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein analyze the ongoing, controversial topic of social media/ technology. The authors organize both sides of the topic by going back and forth and giving different view points. The two sides of the argument are one, that technology and social media "fries our brain" and makes person to person communication more of a problem than what it used to be. On side two, we hear that technology actually brings us together and gives us immense amounts of information that we never had access to before. "You may have heard parents and journalists complain that smartphones, iPads, and other electronic devices that seem almost wired into our brains are destroying our ability to think, communicate,…

As the world becomes increasingly more technology-dependent, it's even more necessary that to be successful, students must learn to be handy with technology. On top of being able to search through a variety of job listings that will spark interest the most, being good with technology is a sharp skill that can be listed to create strong resumes now that every job is involved in the use of technology. Although majority of students know word processing as second nature, knowing how to use specific softwares and technology can make an employer feel better about spending the extra money to hire instead of worrying about tightening the company’s budget even more. The reason behind this is because employers want to save not only money, but time as well, on someone already trained. In an article called, “Benefits of Technology in the Classroom,” by Janelle Cox, an education writer, states, “ Ed-tech in the classroom prepares students for their future and sets them up for this increasing digital economy” (Cox).…

As stated by the U.S. Census Bureau, “Millennials, or America’s youth born between 1982 and 2000, now number 83.1 million and represent more than one-quarter of the nation’s population. Their size exceeds that of the 75.4 million baby boomers” (Buraeau, 2015). The very thought of all these people being harmed and stripped of a real childhood is shocking. This is tens of millions of children that are now young adults who have experienced a great deal of their life in front of a screen. This generation is filled with people who have made technology a priority in their life and now have to deal with the consequences. People often state that everything is okay in moderation. Eating in moderation, exercising in moderation, and in this case, technology in moderation. Technology will always advance, and there is no way to stop that. Nevertheless, what could reduce the harm of technology is using it in a way that does not consume one’s entire life. In addition, future generations need to be taught to understand when enough is enough. More tough love, independence, and patience would be more constructive to children, rather than the impatience and dependence that have resulted from excessive exposure to technology. Psychologist Doreen Dodgen-Magee voices her opinion by saying, “With technology, we are embracing this thing that could be a wonderful side dish or accompaniment to our lives” (Dodgen-Magee, 2010). If technology and social media are only used in a positive and helpful way, it can be less harmful to people’s lives. If these changes were made future generations would benefit…

In a world that has only one constant factor, which is change, it is imperative as educators to provide an education for students that will provide them with a successful foundation for their future endeavors. In order to provide accurate material to students, we, as an educational community, need to gain an understanding for where the world and society is today, as well as the projected developments of the future. Whether the middle school students sitting in the classroom are college bound, or eager to enter the workforce upon high school graduation, all students are in need of technology education. Today, the projected job market is dominated by technology oriented positions and professional growth. An article from the U.S. News reports “As technology seemingly advances its way into every nook and cranny of our society, the job market for individuals with vat knowledge of it is ever expanding” (U.S. News, 2012). However, technology education cannot be efficiently reached if the educators are not given the resources to teach technology. By providing teachers with the knowledge to infuse their lessons with technology, students will be given a competitive edge when entering college, or a technological driven society.…

Visual technology envelops the world. From the moment one wakes up to turn off an alarm in the morning, until the moment the head hits the pillow at night with phone in hand, technology is constant. Even with this rise in technological advances, there are still drawbacks. One major drawback is cyberbullying. Physical battles breaking out in the school parking lot are not as frequent as in the past; now, the real action occurs behind a screen. People are able to hide behind an anonymous user name and post negative and hurtful comments about people they might not even know. With cyberbullying comes effects as well. Fat-shaming comments lead to insecurity, which can then lead to depression and…

Advanced technology in the classroom prepares each student individually for the work force they intend to train for. Jobs today require computer work no matter what the job is. Secretaries need a computer for daily workload, doctors need technology for charting and communication with patients, and even mechanics need technology for diagnostic purposes. The way technology is benefiting the business world in adults is similar to how it can affect the classroom and children. Advanced technology in the classroom can allow students and teachers to virtually communicate and set goals toward the student's direct…

As people age their bodies go through a lot of changes physically as well as psychologically. As humans age normally they undergo changes in their brain which affect cognitive functioning and development. Each person is different so the age-related changes in the structure of the brain and in its function as well as in cognition and cognitive domains are not uniform across the whole brain, nor are the uniform across individuals. This means that some of the changes that a person goes through due to aging another person may not experience. The two basic cognitive functions that are affected most by a person…
