Clostridium tetani is a bacteria which can be found in soil and faeces, and causes the disease Tetanus. [Human Illnesses]. Clostridium tetani bacteria reproduce by binary fission because they are a bacteria. [St Margaret’s College]. In binary fission, bacteria reproduce by splitting themselves in half on a regular basis. [St Margaret’s College]. In ideal conditions, the Clostridium tetani bacteria may reproduce by binary fission every 20 minutes. [St Margaret’s College]. To live and reproduce by binary fission, Clostridium tetani require water, food, moderate temperatures between 30 degrees celsius and 40 degrees celsius as well as neutral conditions, which are not too acidic or alkaline as “Most bacteria are killed by even weak acids”.     The incubation period for Clostridium tetani Infection is from three to twenty - one days. In most cases tetanus is found within 10 days of contact with the bacteria. The incubation period is depending on the severity of the infection. When the wound is deep or more infected with the C. tetani the incubation period will be shorter and the chances of death are high. When contacted with C. tetani some of the symptoms can include involuntary muscle tightening such as stiffness in the jaw which is why it tetanus is also known for lockjaw. Other common symptoms that can occur are headache, fevers, and an elevated blood pressure and heart rate.
