Choosing a Great Leader: Ungku Abdul Aziz
WHY WE CHOOSE UNGKU ABDUL AZIZ? It was not a quick decision for us to choose the right personality to be discussed in the Leadership Analysis. There are a whole lot of lists that we could choose for in the World’s greatest leader. The list ranging from Mahatma Gandhi, Malcolm X, Donald Trump, Hosni Mubarak, and maybe from a different point of view, Adolph Hitler. From local point of view there is also Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad whom is considered as a world greatest leader as well. We have the CEO of Maybank, Datuk Seri Wahid Omar, our Prime Minister himself, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Haji Abdul Razak, and the lists continues because a great leader comes with many achievements. It is hard to suggest one name that people could probably miss to make our analysis unique. The name popped up in our mind is Professor Diraja Ungku Abdul Aziz bin Ungku Abdul Hamid. He is a Malaysia Economist with so many achievements there in his hand. He wasn’t the one who like publicity. He rarely appears on the newspaper especially after he retires at 1988. But, his tremendous work was not to be forgotten. The list of his contribution to the country is so meaningful and continuous until now. He is a “guru” in the economic and education sector. A great leader he was, it was quoted by the University Malaya staff that he’d give them all his attentions and help when it was a legitimate concern. A great leader is always there to motivate and drives people forward. The particular leader has the ability to persuade others to follow his vision, and there was Ungku Abdul Aziz, to lead his followers His achievements are remarkable. Staring with his studies on rural poverty, he became involved in several projects and created several institutions that are still thriving today. According to News Straits Time (28th January 2012), once he learnt that rural Malay farmers would sell their land in order to pay haj pilgrimage to Mecca.
