Cheerios Argumentative Essay
I recently watched a cheerios commercial that was aired during the 2014 Super bowl back in February. This commercial was different than any other cheerios commercial because it involved an interracial couple and their mixed daughter. In the video, you see the little girl and her mother sitting at the table. The girl starts off by saying “mom, dad said cheerios were good for your heart is that true?” The mother replies, “Cheerios has healthy grains and it helps with cholesterol so that’s heart healthy.” The little girl smirks and walks away. The next scene you see the dad sleeping on the couch with a whole bunch of cheerios on top of his heart. This video received a lot of backlash on YouTube about this interracial couple. There are constantly so many stereotypes being made about African Americans. People are ignorant and they are so quick to judge someone’s culture without actually knowing anything about it. I myself am married to an African American man and our children are also mixed but he does not have heart problems nor does anybody in his family. Most categorize people by color and culture but that does not mean that we are all the same. Though slavery was overruled in 1865 and segregation ended in 1964, there are still people out there who believe in it. When people saw this commercial of the interracial couple, the people who don’t necessarily like or believe in interracial couples also had some things to say about the video. Some of them said they would no longer eat cheerios because of knowing an interracial couple does or was even in the commercial. Of course these people are wrong and should be banned for saying things like this but, they do have freedom of speech and they’re entitled to their own opinion. Companies like cheerios need to be careful when they make commercials involving topics like this because the media and viewers will express their feelings towards it. When it comes to race, many people take offense to it because it’s a very sensitive topic. If it is not portrayed in a sensitive way, viewers will not be pleased and this could potentially put their business at

The Cosby Show presents a healthy model for how people of different races should interact. However, despite these positive attributes given to Blacks by the Cosby show, there was still no mention of interracial marriage. All of the Black character’s mates were of the same race.     Taylor et al. mention that the most striking finding is a constant stereotypical portrayal of Asian Americans as the “all work, no play” group of people (619). They are see are the smartest group of minorities due to the stereotypes of them succeeding in math and science subjects in school. They are more likely to be seen in advertisements for technology- related products, business and technical magazines, and business settings and relationships (Taylor et al. 619). Stereotyping in advertisements and television happens to African Americans and Hispanic Americans also. This affects how others see these groups of minorities. This is also the case when it comes to characters on television shows. Mastro and Behm-Morawitz state, “race/ethnicity does, in fact, impact the manner in which characters are depicted on primetime television” (124). When creating advertisements or commercials, minorities are given roles that best “fit” with them. Most of the time they are left in the background of advertisements. When African Americans are used for actual product selling, they are rarely seen alone (and instead were accompanied by white models) (Zinkhan et al 549). As I previously stated, they are mostly in the background of the advertisements. The same goes for their speaking roles. Harold H. Kassarjian states that “Negroes are given .65 percent of the speaking roles in commercials and 1.39 percent of the nonspeaking roles” (29). They have been in advertisements alone, but they are for items that are mainly used by that group of people. For example, George M. Zinkhan, William J. Qualls, and Abhijit Biswas state that when blacks were present in product ads, they were more likely to advertise personal products (hair care) than non-personal (durable goods) (549).
