Characters In The Movie Doubt
In the film “Doubt”, a Parish was led by the pastor, Father Flynn, and the principal, Sister Aloysius. Both leaders wanted to bring the Parish together and build Kingdom, but they each had their own flaws and ways of tearing Kingdom down as well. Sister Aloysius applied the rules at all times, but used fear as her way to control the Parish and keep it intact. Father Flynn opposed this and confronted her many times about it. Father Flynn also wanted to uphold the rules, but also make the school more of a fun and welcoming place, without as many of the strict rules that were being enforced by Sister Aloysius. In the beginning of the movie, Sister Aloysius cared deeply about each student, but also wanted to keep tradition and sophistication …show more content…
As they walked to Mrs. Miller’s work, they each had their own opinion on the exchange between Donald and Father Flynn. Mrs. Miller believed that Father Flynn was only trying to help and comfort Donald, as he never seemed frightened at home, and has always been fond of Father Flynn. Sister Aloysius, however, was deeply in disagreement and had other ideas of what happened. Ultimately, Sister Aloysius could not convince Mrs. Miller, and went back to the school. Finally, Sister Aloysius had Father Flynn removed, which brought the Parish less tension and stress. In the end, we never know what Father Flynn did or why. I believe that Father Flynn did in fact do something to Donald Miller and because of this, was tearing down Kingdom. Sister Aloysius kept her faith and loved for the students alive when trying to drive Flynn out of the school, which she ultimately did. She brought the school to a possibly more safe and loving state. I thought that Sister Aloysius was doing a great job at building Kingdom, and was defending her school at all costs. Mrs. Miller and Sister James were very confused and bewildered about what happened, and ultimately defended Father Flynn out of love for the Church, and Donald Miller. This leads me to believe both Mrs. Miller and Sister James were bringing the school closer to Kingdom, as well as

The story begins with Sophia and her mother witnessing the hanging of Nathan Hale, a patriot spy. This was very traumatizing to Sophia and, had she not seen it, she would have never done what she did over the course of the next three years. After Sophia and her mother arrive safely at their house, along with Sophia’s father later on, they were forced to let a loyalist soldier live in their house with them. His name was Lieutenant John Andre and despite the fact that he was the enemy, he was very kind and Sophia began to fancy him. Sophia had to work at Mr. Gain’s printing shop to support her family because prices had gone through the roof and Sophia’s father could not go into work because he was injured. Meanwhile, John Andre often “flirted” with Sophia and her crush on him only grew. One day when she and John Andre were out walking, Sophia got a glimpse of her brother. Her family was very worried because he went missing a little while back. Anyways, Sophia’s brother, William was with a crowd of patriot soldiers heading towards King’s College which was now a loyalist jail. Sophia was able to visit her brother once by bribing a guard, but the next time she went she learned that he had been transferred to another jail, the sugarhouse. When Sophia told her parents of this, they came to one conclusion: they needed to get William out of jail. So, when John Andre came home that evening, the family begged John Andre to help.…

Cora’s as a Christian women contrasts with Addie’s real experience with sin. As Addie put it, “people to whom sin is just a matter of words, to them salvation is just words too (176).” This quote describes Addie’s religious views perfectly. She does not consider her affair a bad thing; therefore, why is repentance necessary? If you have done nothing wrong then why do you need forgiveness? Cora believes it is pride that holds Addie back from Christ, that she has done nothing wrong (167). Rather ironically, Addie had an affair, with a minister of all people. However, Addie does not feel any different than what Cora believes, yet for different reasons. If Cora knew the truth she would be amazed at Addie’s genuine feelings about sin. Any social…

Throughout the story, the grandmother’s selfish attitude is apparent. She believes from the beginning that she is the voice of reason and everything she says is right. In response to taking the children to Florida instead of Tennessee, she insists “You all ought to take them somewhere else for a change so they would see different parts of the world and be broad. They never have been to east Tennessee” (59). However, in saying this she has no intentions on helping the children be broad, she says this so the children’s parents will take them to Tennessee, away from The Misfit. Eventually, it is this self-centered attitude that leads to the family’s demise, as she suggests that they take a detour to visit an old plantation in her neighborhood from when she was a young lady. It is in this segment of the story that O’Connor’s religious overtones come into effect. Once The Misfit and his crew of fellow prison escapees shoot the rest of the family, he and the grandmother are alone and she begins to attempt to bring him to Jesus. However, the irony at this point is that The Misfit may be more in touch with Jesus than she is. He says, “Jesus was the only One that ever raised the dead,” The Misfit continued, “and he shouldn’t have done it. He thrown everything off balance. If He did what He said, then it’s nothing for you to do but throw away everything and follow Him, and if He…

Tradition plays a part in the message, as to disturb the universe you must break tradition. For example, Jerry not doing his part in the chocolate sale, which has always been a Trinity tradition for all the boys to help fundraise, causes shock and admiration. Another example is Archie getting the Vigils involved with the chocolate sales, something in which was never part of their policy and causing some disarray within the group. Brother Leon also, by raising the number of chocolates and doubling its price, breaks the tradition of the school’s sale and increasing its pressure to be successful. It is also due to tradition that The Vigils and the other various sales conducted by the school are accepted by the student body.…

When the conversation grows awkward in the missionary circle, I clearly observed how Aunt Alexandra would quickly try to dismiss the topic and lighten the overall mood. When Miss Maudie grows angry at Mrs. Merriweather, Aunt Alexandra senses the awkwardness and makes an effort to better the atmosphere around them. “Aunt Alexandra got up from the table and swiftly passed more refreshments, neatly engaging Mrs. Merriweather and Mrs. Gates in brisk conversation. When she had them well on the road with Mrs. Perkins, Aunt Alexandra stepped back.” (Lee 266). She clearly dreads the thought of her missionary circle becoming something to be remembered bitterly in the future, so she quickly “changes the air”.…

She even lied to her superior, Father Flynn, in hopes that she could get him to admit what he did; she even contacted the boy’s mother to try and get her involved. She put herself through all of this trouble, not even sure if she was right about her suspicions, to make Father Flynn leave so that the boy would be safe. At the same time, kids often do not understand that doing so can cause repercussions because they believe they’re doing what is right. For instance, when Scout’s first grade teacher does not understand why a student will not accept a quarter, Scout goes on to tell her “‘Ah--Miss Caroline...he’s a Cunningham’”(26). She continues to explain that the Cunninghams do not take anything from anybody. In Scout’s mind, she’s helping Miss Caroline learn about the town. She believes that she’s saving the teacher from “subsequent mortification” (28). Scout did not think before standing up to ‘educate’ Miss Caroline and did not realize that maybe it was not necessary. It was her instinct, which happens to be very common in young kids. They often do not understand that in this case, knowledge of townsfolk naturally comes over time. About a day later, another student in the class answered Miss Caroline when she did not grasp why another student was behaving a certain way: ‘He’s one of the Ewells, ma’am’” (36). Both times the students’ do not realize that their teacher not knowing about the person in question is not something that needs fixing. Because of this, the students do not understand why it frustrates her so much. Miss Caroline is new to the area and is not used to it yet. To…
