“You are innocent until you understand...”(71). In Bless Me Ultima by Rudolfo Anaya, Anaya writes about a young boy who witnesses terrible events and has to learn to understand the inevitability of said events. Antonio Márez, due to many outside events, is forced to question all of the morals and beliefs he has been taught and by doing so, he’s also forced to lose his innocence. While growing up Tony’s family, his mom especially, are devout Catholics. Tony was raised in a Catholic way, and believes in Catholicism, when he was growing up he was only exposed to people who believed in the same God as he did.
