Character
The Count of Monte Cristo the main character, Edmond Dantes, takes on various identities. Some people have even argued that his continuing metamorphosis verge on Multiple Personality Disorder. Those people are wrong. Though he does exhibit similar symptoms, Dantes is fully conscious of the new identities he takes on. In fact, he does changes intentionally. His purpose in taking on new identities is to seek vengeance on his enemies while maintaining the innocence of Edmond Dantes.
Edmond Dantes a successful, happy, young sailor was wrongfully imprisoned on September 15, 1815. He was sent there by four men, each of whom had a different reason to be hungry for his downfall. Caderousse was guilty because of his drunken stupidity, Fernand because of his lustful envy, Danglars because of his treacherous greed, and finally Villefort because of the terrible lengths he would go to in order to protect his name. When Dantes entered prison he was a nineteen-year-old boy with a kind and pure soul. After learning about the conspiracy to ruin his life, however, he became obsessed with getting vengeance. Upon his escape from the Chateau d'If, he set out on a journey to reward those who had been good to him and to set right the wrongs that had been done to him.
Dantes was initially successful at his attempt. The first person from his past whom he encountered was Monsieur Caderousse. He went to Caderousse's inn dressed as Abbe Faria and was told what had become of the three men most responsible for his imprisonment. Caderousse had no idea that the man he was talking to was Edmond Dantes. There was one person, however, that recognized him immediately. Mercedes, his former fiancé, had never forgotten Dantes or the young love that they once shared. One of the reasons that Mercedes had loved him so much was the great admiration she had for him. She considered Dantes a sweet, honest, fair, and forgiving

The Count of Monte Cristo is a very sourceful book with characters creating different and new identities. Fernand changes to Count de Morcerf during the time of Dantes' imprisonment, Mercedes changes to Countess de Morcerf after her marriage to Fernand, Cadderouse changes to M. Pilletin, Benedetto changes to Andrea Cavalcanti to disguise and murders Cadderouse, and last but certaintly not least Edmund Dantes with the various identity changes. Even though these characters names are just being changed or in Dantes' case, changing their names, this still means creating various identities. In every identity change, there is a different name or "alias" as some people call it, and with every name comes a different identity. Dantes had to create a different personality to go with each new character to keep himself disguised. Just like anyone else who may be popular, people feel the need to change their identities for many different reasons, some more commonly used than others. People who change their identities may feel the need to change their identity, because it lets you be someone different, it's unique, it defines who you really are or who you want to be, it allows you to hide or get away from yourself and others, and many other reasons. For these reasons or at least some of them, I feel that Dantes, the main character of this book creates a new identity so many times. The main reason I believe that he changed his identity so many times was to hide himself Edmund Dantes from the people he confronted.…

Dumas reveals a theme of loyalty by showing that Dantes was still loyal to Mercedes even though she married his enemy, Fernand. In the novel, the Count of Monte Cristo, by Alexander Dumas, the main character, Edmond Dantés has some changes in morals and values throughout the book. At the beginning of the novel, the most important things in life for Dantés are: his father, Mercedes, and becoming a successful sailor. He had a positive outlook on life: “[Edmond and Mercedes] were so happy that they saw nothing but themselves and the beautiful blue sky which seemed to be blessing them”(18). All of those were soon taken from him, and what he wanted out of life had changed. He now wanted nothing more than to escape the dungeon he was held captive in, for about 14 years. In prison, he became a bitter, cold-hearted man: “His soul became dark and a…

In Alexandre Dumas’, Count of Monte Cristo, every character is putting up a front, façade, or fake persona. People with fabricated personalities are the only ones who believe their lies while everyone else sees through it. Dantes sees this pattern in his adversaries as they provide him with a Utopian idea, but in reality Edmond is able to read between the lines and use this against them. As always quoted, fear is your greatest enemy as it never goes away. Fear is always there while your actual enemy fades away. The greatest fear is the fear out of the realm of control. Dantes utilizes fear to gain victory over his opponents as they are used to dominance, but loss of control causes them to unravel and Dantes to pull back…
