Criteria Assessed: Understanding Biology and Research Skills

Assessment Task: Research Task

Context

Populations of species have changed over time, some relatively quickly and some slowly but all in response to particular selection pressures according to the evidence available to date.
You are a scientific journalist and your editor has asked you to prepare an article explaining how a particular (you choose) species has changed over time. The editor requests that you explain the process of inheritance and link the changes observed over a number of years to the Theory of Natural Selection. You are also required to hypothesize on the potential changes of the population of your chosen species in the future justified on your research or findings.

The Task

1. You are to choose a species from the following list:
Cheetah
Elephant Seal
MRSA
Red Bellied Black Snake
Cane Toad
A GM Crop such as domestic wheat
A genetic human disease for example Huntingdon’s Chorea or Sickle Cell Anemia that illustrates higher prevalence in particular regions of the world
You can select another species that is not listed however your choice MUST be approved by your teacher before you begin the task.

2. Discuss your choice with your teacher before 21st February

3. Start your research…… ask your teacher for guidance on how to do this. Ensure you purchase a small notebook or prepare an electronic version to collect all your research articles. This will formulate

What are the factors that lead to evolutionary change? Using mathematical equations, Hardy & Weinberg in the early 20th century showed that evolutionary change – measured as changes in allele frequencies in a population from one generation to the next – will not occur unless certain kinds of “evolutionary agents” are affecting the population. The Hardy-Weinberg equation can be used to describe the allele frequencies in populations that are not changing evolutionarily – and also can be used to determine if populations are changing over time.…

The results of this study relate to the larger issue of how the forces of evolution work in real world populations since mutation, genetic drift, gene flow and natural selection are within species all around us. One population that experiences these four forces of evolution is a population of bears. When it comes to mutation, if a population of bears only had dark-colored bears, but then all of sudden a light bear appeared in the population this would mean that one of the alleles that determine fur color got mutated and ended up in one bear.…

Sickle Cell Anemia is a the most common single gene disorder found mostly among Black Americans (Wethers, 2000). According to scientific research, it affects approximately one in 375 persons of African ancestry. According to one researcher, "Sickle Cell conditions are also found to be in persons from Mediterranean countries also, such as Turkey, the Arabian peninsula, and the Indian subcontinent"( Wethers, 2000, p.1014). Extensive research has also proved that Spanish speaking persons in the United States, plus people from the Caribbean and South and Central America, are also effected by Sickle Cell Anemia (Wethers, 2000)…

Looking through old letters, pictures, and conversations from previous months and years, hits me with a shock of reality and how nothing is, or will ever be the same. Focusing on this realization not necessarily makes me happy, but neither does it make me sad. “Things always change and happen for a reason.” So I’ve heard. But what exactly is that reason? Is it something we as individuals must search for ourselves? Overall, it really does astonish me how much can change within a short period of time.…
