Cell Structure vs. City Structure: Definitions
Nucleus- The nucleus is the control center of the cell. This is where DNA is contained. This is like the town hall or the mayor’s office because it is the control center of a town. The nucleus uses DNA like a city uses blueprints to direct the production of protein.

Nucleolus- The nucleolus is where ribosome is made and is rich in RNA content. It is located inside the nucleus. A mayor is like this because the mayor makes everything in the town happen. He also works from the town hall, or works from the nucleus.

Nuclear Membrane- The nuclear membrane is the double lipid bilayer membrane that surrounds and protects the nucleus. This is like the police officers because it is their job to surround and protect the city from harm.

Cell Membrane- The cell membrane controls what enters and what leaves the cell, while also protecting it. This is like the water surrounding the island of our small town because the water causes difficulty in things entering or leaving the town, nothing can enter the town without being on a boat or driving over the bridge.

Mitochondria- The mitochondria is the energy supplier to the cell. It is enclosed by a double membrane, and is identifiable due to its cristae which tend to divide their interiors. This is like a power plant because the power plant supplies electricity to the entire town. Power plants are enclosed by the building walls and a fence for protection, such as a double membrane. It is also divided into many floors, such as the interior of the Mitochondria.

Golgi Apparatus- The Golgi Apparatus stacks and packages protein. Once this protein is packaged, vesicles pinch off, which will allow it to be opened to the exterior through exocytosis. It transports the goods created in the Endoplasmic Reticulum and ribosome to the rest of the cell. This is like the postal office because the postal workers package what needs to be mailed, stacks it, and delivers it to whenever it needs to go in the city.

Being the largest organelle in the cell, the appearance of the nucleus is quite unique. It is the most obvious organelle in any eukaryotic cell, composing about 10% of the total volume of the cell and is found near the center of the cell. Usually the nucleus is round and is surrounded by a membrane, called the nuclear envelope, which is similar to the cell membrane that encloses the entire cell. The envelope is riddled with holes, called nuclear pores which allow specific materials to pass in and out of the nucleus. The nucleus is surrounded by the cytoplasm inside a cell. In the nucleus, there are masses of threads called chromatin, which is indistinct in the nondividing cell, but it condenses to chromosomes at the time of cell division. This is where the DNA resides. The most prominent structure in the nucleus is the nucleolus which produces ribosomal RNA or rRNA.…

Similar to SER, Rough endoplasmic reticulum is a phospholipid membrane network that forms cytosol filled sheet like layers and sacs, studded with ribosomes - providing its 'rough' appearance. Formed as an extension to the nuclear envelope, the ribosomes deposit their proteins directly into the RER where they are 'pinched off' as transport vesicles to be transported throughout the cell, to the Golgi complex or beyond.…

In many cells there is a the nucleus, which was first described by Robert Brown. If a cell does or does not have a nucleus has been used by scientists to divide cells into two general categories. The two categories are Eukaryotics, which are cells with a nucleus, and Prokaryotic, which are cells without a nucleus. The nucleus has been found to be the information center of the cell and contains DNA. It also directs all activities that occur in a living cell. It's like a mini me of the heart and brain of a human body.…
