Cell Phones should not be Allowed in School – No
Cell Phones should not be Allowed in School – No
When I first read the question, should cell phones be allowed in school?, my gut reaction is NO. If students are allowed to have cell phones in class then there is going to be a lot more cheating, more distractions, and less classroom focus. In order to keep students from cheating there would have to be more than just a few different tests made up. The distraction of students texting, reading texts, and such would go through the roof, and with the age of smart phones students could be doing many things that are not allowed with the schools acceptable use policy. If there was a way to block students from accessing sites on their phones like they can on the internet then it might not be too bad, but since they can surf the internet through 3G and now 4G technology I don’t see how we can keep them from accessing “forbidden” material. On the site teaching technology suite 101, they mention that phones can even be used for arranging drug deals, plotting a bomb threat, and/or arranging a fight. They also mention a Fair Cell Phone Use Policy, which is a great idea, but how could we monitor it?
Ezine Articles shares a great point, if there was a bomb threat, or another reason for having to evacuate the school, then if the students had their phones they could be in more danger because they are not giving their full attention to the administration during this crucial point. They could be contacting their parents to come and get them, which could cause even more problems because then they may run off to their parents and the school would not know where they are. I actually had that happen and it is quite scary. We had a bomb threat in one of the districts I have worked in and my student was so scared that he texted his mom, even though he wasn’t allowed to have his phone, and then snuck off to the store down the street for someone to pick him up. It was terrifying when we realized that he was gone, especially since he was with us when we exited the school.
The National School Safety and Security Services state, “On a day-to-day basis, they are disruptive to the educational environment. This also has been the general position of many school districts over the years”. Cell phones are disruptive. Even if a phone is on vibrate you can usually still hear it going off. I know that there are good things that can come out of students having phones in school but in this case I feel that the cons outweigh the pros. They are disruptive, they can be used for harming others, and they can be used to cheat. These reasons alone are enough from me to say that they should not be allowed.

There is more than one side to the debate about cell phone availability during school. One claim is that students should be allowed to have their phones on them and use their cell phones during appropriate times. In the article, the authors provide details about how there are numerous reasons why cell phones should be allowed during school. Students should be allowed access to cell phones, because if they are responsible enough to be going off to college in a year or so, they should be responsible enough to have a cell phone on them and use it wisely (George and Cook). I strongly agree that cell phones should be allowed on school grounds. I have two reasons to support my opinion. First having cell phones can be a helpful learning tool to teachers. Max Gold supported my opinion. He stated “By using texting as a positive tool instead of a means of distraction educators can now have student’s text in the answers that the students have questions on. Also Greenberg High School stated “The Students who have a smart phone can use various applications that are designed to assist in learning and designed just for students. Many of these smart phones have programs that are similar to what is found in a laptop or desktop computer. Being able to quickly look up facts on the internet is possible on many phones. If a student needs assistance with class work and does not have access to a computer, a smart phone can be used in a snap. Also most private schools allow cell phones. In private schools the prevailing view is that cell phones are here to stay. They are an essential line of communication between frantically busy parents and their children. As a result, most private schools allow cell phones on their premises with the understanding that phones must be turned off during class and only used under certain conditions and in specified places. Most schools have very specific guidelines written into their handbooks and acceptable use policy manuals. All students agree to abide by those rules both while on the school premises and also while under the school's jurisdiction when off campus. second opinion is parents can keep in contact with their children. Maya Cohen supported this reason by stating that “Cell phones create a convenience that was previously unavailable. With cell phones, you…

Other than texting, another reason that cell phones should not be allowed in school is that cell phones are prone to be stolen by another student. Andrew, another friend of mine put his phone in his schoolbag during gym and left the schoolbag in the locker room. When he went to get his schoolbag after gym, he discovered that his cell phone was missing. He looked around for it hoping that it was on the ground but could not find it. He told his gym teacher, but his gym teacher told Andrew that he couldn’t help him. Finding the thief took a lot of time and trouble, but in the end he found out who it was. Although Andrew got his phone back, many people are not as…

Cellular phones are very distracting. Are we now slaves to our technology? If the student needs to call home they only need to go to the main office or guidance to contact a parent or guardian. Most calls home are not for emergencies, they are for mere simple communication that do not need to be done during school. It must have been a miracle that I made it through that time without the need of a cell phone. The majority of the calls, if not all, will be used in idle chatter. Their current uses are for distraction, social interaction, and lewd photography. And let's not ignore the parents who would call students DURING CLASS to talk about non-emergency issues. If it is truly an emergency, call the school main number and have the child brought to the office. There should be NO tcell phones in the schools.…

Although mobile phones are a great tool for many students around the world, they can be a bad thing to students. For example, you can get side tracked by playing a game, they could watch videos on websites such as YouTube, and it can actually hurt students. On a student's mobile phone, they can easily get distracted with a notification from a game or a text message from a friend. One second they were working on their essay, now they are in a group chat making jokes with their friends or playing a game they had recently…

If you were to personally conduct an experiment and ask any young adult in America whether or not they can go a whole year without using their cell phones for anything other than calling other people, almost ten times out of ten, the answer would most likely be no. In the 1980s, the first cellular device was released and ready to be put on the market. The need for cellphones has grown vastly over time causing it to be brought into education within school systems. The use of cellphones in school is a topic that many educators argue about. The main issue regarding the use of cellular devices during instructional periods is whether or not it affects the…

"The ban, which was implemented by the Bloomberg administration, went into effect in 2006, but Mayor Bill De Blasio championed the policy change, saying that he thought it was important for parents to be able to easily contact their kids." (Kiema) Some teachers think it would be nice if cell phones weren't allowed in school but since they are they should use them to their advantage. As soon as the new policy is in place starting in March, individual schools in New York City will be able to establish their own policies concerning cell phone use in the classroom, leaving many teachers to determine how they will react to the phones in hallways and classrooms. Students should be aloud to have their phones because it is also a way for parents to contact their kids during school hours or vice versa. It should also be aloud if the students have practice and then it got cancelled so they would have to call their parents and tell them about the change in plans. Truth is that some schools are open to the cell phone idea and some aren't.…
