There are many causes of the start of World War One but I am going to tell you the m.a.i.n cause of it. So m.a.i.n stands for militarism, alliances, imperialism, and nationalism. There are series of events that led up to the first world war. The war began in 1914 and lasted until 1918. One of the main things that led up to World War 1 was the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand, heir to the throne of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. A Serbian, 19-year old Gavrilo Princip assassinated him. This set off a chain of events because of the allied system. By 1914, Europe was already divided into two hostile groups. France and Germany had been involved in conflicts with each other for years. Each country was trying to find other countries to be it’s allies in case of future wars. Alliances are formed when countries band together against a common threat, and pledge to support each other in times in war. The “Allied Powers” were France, Russia, and Britain. And the “Central Powers” were Germany, Hungary and Italy. Imperialism was another cause of World War 1. Imperialism was a cause of World War 1 because as the countries of Europe became more industrialized, they were increasingly interested in gaining colonies abroad to build their empires. There was a huge competition for raw materials, new markets glory, prestige and power. Countries believed that acquiring colonies would provide the homeland with these benefits; France, Russia, Usa, Britain, and Germany. Nationalism played a role of the cause of World War 1. Nationalism is the feeling of deep loyalty to one’s people and homeland. Characterized by pride, loyalty, and “blind, faith”. “We are the best, better than the rest and can’t be beaten”.
