Caribbean Descriptive Writing
“Ava, wake up!” My mom buoyantly nudged me awake. I peeled open my eyes, blinking away the tired fog, and glanced around. I was in the shiny, midnight black jeep my family was renting, which had become tan from being continuously splattered by sand and mud. The car was parked next to a small cottage belonging to , caked in bright pink and yellow paint. Proud roosters with long, shiny, satin feathers, squawked noisily. Lazy goats waddled around, nibbling on vibrant green grass. Short trees covered in ripe, yellow bananas flourished, along with grapefruits and tall palm trees. Fire red flowers the size of lamp poles with small snow-white buds swayed gently in the warm ocean breeze. Although I couldn’t see very far past the dense wall of palm trees and bushes behind the cottage, I could make out the soft, crystal blue waves of the Caribbean in the distance. It was 2011, and my family and I were in Dominica, a small island in the Caribbean. My mom stood in front of me, an ecstatic smile …show more content…
After a few seconds of desperate flailing, my feet found the mountain edge and landed on a tree root that stuck out like a ladder rung. I shimmied down the rope, then stepped on the next tree root. Each step I took was with great care because I wasn’t sure which tree roots and rocks were sturdy, or which ones were delicate glass that would snap at your feet. Panic filled my chest and raced through my body as I made my way down the steep mountain side. My head raced with scenarios of my tragic death. Rocks would give away beneath my feet and I would slip and fall, my body slamming into the boulders and water below. Or maybe one of the vines that I was trusting as ladder was really some sort of poisonous reptile. I wiped sweat from my forehead, my hand trembling as my heart beat away in my chest like a woodpecker. I continued down the sheer cliff edge, my eyes filled with terrified

Beneath the glimmer of moonlight, the lifeless trees stood motionless as I sprinted frantically, leaping over the dancing leaves, which rustled around my feet. The bustling of the towering trees; the howls of what was around me; the sky of what seemed to be falling in on me.…

You have been doing the same climb for years. Scraping your knees on rocks, pulling through the brush. This was your favorite time to do it. Right as the sun was kissing the horizon of the sea, and the sky begin to let go of the night. It is colder than usual today, but you don't mind. The salty air pulls you forward motivating you with its sharp breath. As you come to the top of the cliff, you begin to see the glassy ocean lazily lapping upon a silver beach that seems to come out of a long, jagged cliff that disappears into the sea. You take a deep breath in and close your eyes, letting your imagination run wild. When you open them, the same familiar scenery fills your vision. You watch as an Osprey circles down the side of the cliff, and then it disappears into its jagged side.…

The mountains were stone dark, secured with trees whose hues were a blend of woodsy cocoa, knoll, key lime, and margarita green. Scattered powder-puff mists gradually fled over the sky and the sun feed like a bolt. Seeing this made me feel like I inadvertently touched base to paradise. I breath gradually, attempting to recall each snapshot of me being encompassed by woodland, sky, and mountains. We began climbing the gigantic mountain, talking, grinning and chuckling together. After like an hour we sat down for a moment on an immense uneven and dusty rock close to the waterfall. The wind that blew through the trees into our confronts now conveyed a light sprinkle from the waterfall, and a clue of peace. The sound of the wind shrieking, the waterfall smashing against the stones and the fowls singing their wonderful tunes, made me feel considerably more joyful than I was at that point. We began moving to the top once more. My legs began to hurt yet I didn't give an indication of my torment. I raised my eyes to the sky, and my sight fell on the hawk who skimmed over the wind. At that time, I craved flying as well, over the mountains and over the oceans. I strolled slower now, thinking how brilliant it would be to fly, and the greater part of the…

The car plunged from sun drenched desert into tall, dark palms. Into a different world. Inside, the road softened to a track that wound and bumped its way forward over sandy, unimproved soil, shielded from the sun’s glare by walls of greenery. That is, the track came about as close as any vehicleway can to being in harmony with earth and vegetation. But before long it ended; just petered out. A few yards ahead, nestling so naturally among the palms that at first my eye hardly registered it, stood a thatched-roof cabin. Or perhaps the right word is “shanty.” For the place had a definite South Sea Island air. The big stars-and-stripes hanging from a flagpole seemed almost colonial.…

Once I felt as though I could do it, I let my heart rate settle a little bit and then walked towards the daunting ledge. I looked over the ledge at the water below and had to take one step back and regroup. I was trying to drown out the members of my family who were saying things like “you can do it!”,“You’re almost there” and, “I believe in you”, but after hearing those things I realized it was much needed, it gave me a boost of confidence. I walked back to the ledge, turned my back to the open water, and faced the gigantic rock I would be attempting to climb down. I gripped my hands tightly on the cold rock and moved one foot down the side until I found a small ledge I could rest my foot on. The only thing that was going through my mind was the possibility of the rope holding my weight, preventing me from falling, could break and I would fall and hit the hard rocks below me. Hot tears were streaming down my bright red face, I was looking up at my family through my vision blurred with tears of…

The day seemed longer by the minute and the aching head ache wasn’t helping either. Buzzing in her ear and the throbbing in her head didn’t make it easy on her trying to figure out where she was. Her wet back felt like it was touching something like leather, maybe a car seat she thought. The sound of the blasting V8 engine reassured her that she was. Arnold Friend was driving while listening to a Bobby King program but his metallic shades couldn’t give a hint whether he liked it or not. Just then Arnold turned his head and saw who just woke up. “Mornin’ honey” he said in his usual deep tone. She had to turn away because the glasses reflected the sunset right into her eyes and it was that moment that she realized that it was almost dusk and she still wasn’t home.…

I scampered around looking for shelter as the rain started to pitter patter against the forest floor. But almost as if by a miracle I stumbled upon a cave that had been made in the base of the mountain just as a tremendous lightning strike and thunder convulsed all around me. In the process of diving into the cave’s opening I scraped my forearm against the coarse dry ground of the cave and filled my mouth with the taste of old gritty earth, however, despite my injuries and horrid taste in my mouth I was safe from the storm.…

As I entered the hidden destination, there it lay, a massive 70 foot tall waterfall. The water was rushing down the smooth side of this massive stone. Trees were hanging over the sides of the waterfall as if they were staring at their death. I was frightened to do what I was about to do, but instead of pondering the situation, I threw on my swimming trunks and made my way over to the base of the deleterious waterfall. I grabbed a rope that was on the side of the waterfall, covert in some bushes.…

I kept myself on pace, past the sidewalk, and down the small hill. My feet shuffled faster, my breathing became heavier. I lowered my arms, lengthened my strides and prayed to God that he would give me strength. My lungs began to scream obscenities, my heart threatened to leave my chest, and I was sure my legs were planning my murder. I started to embrace the pain exploding through my body. I began work among the strains of physical feeling and pushing myself against my mental limitations. Each leaden step burnt my tired muscles and bore into my brain. An undesirable battle presented itself to me. Demands made themselves prevalent in my mind.…

As I sprint across the hot sand that burns the soles of my feet, the smell of salt water and sunscreen hits my face. I can see teenagers nearby as they dive to save a falling volleyball, covering themselves in grains of sand. While I’m preoccupied, watching the intense game of volleyball, the cold waves of the Atlantic Ocean come crashing down on my legs. I can hear my best friend, Tara, dying of laughter as my body tries to adjust to the temperature of the sparking turquoise waters. Surrounding us is vibrantly colored tropical plants and trees.…
