French-English Relations
Today’s relationship between Quebec and the rest of Canada has been relatively steady. Over the years, Québec has certainly developed separately but in association with the rest of Canada. However, without influence from the past, their relationships would not be what it is today. The development of the French and English relationship follows a long and complicated history. Throughout history, tensions between French and English Canada have been evident. Looking back at World War I and II, one of the key issues that divided English and French Canada was conscription. Quebec was against conscription, while English-Canada supported it. However, this is not the only issue that influenced the relationship between Quebec and the rest of Canada. Throughout history, there have been many defining moments which have influenced this relationship. This essay will outline three defining moments. The first one is ‘the October crisis’, which caused a national sense of crisis when a French separatist group kidnapped 2 government officials. Then, the passing of Bill 101 which brought a controversy both inside and outside of Quebec. And thirdly, ‘The Constitution of 1982’ which changed the contract that linked Quebec to the rest of Canada. These three defining moments have greatly helped to establish the character of the relationship between Quebec and the rest of Canada.

With the United States being Canada’s only neighbor, comparisons and similarities have been made regarding all forms of the two nations for many years. Seymour Martin Lipset tries to explain the difference between Canada and the United States in the 1980s through different aspects, such as religion, economy, culture and politics. However, it is a very difficult task to break down the two country’s similarities and differences through only a few pages. While I believe that Lipset’s arguments on the similarities and differences between Canada and the United States may have been effective in the 1980’s, I do not believe that the same arguments would hold the same weight today as they did back then. Factors have changed within both of the two nations…

There are about 6.5 million French Canadians living in the country, which is about one-fourth of the population. The majority of this population, 5.1 million of them, live in the province of Quebec: the first settlement of New France. Along with population, the French have also influenced language greatly in Canada. About 80% of Quebec’s population are native speakers of French, and 95% of Quebec’s population have learned French as their first or second language. In addition, 22% of Canada’s entire population speaks French, which is about 7.3 million people. However, French spoken in Canada differs from French spoken in France. The pronunciation and vocabulary of Canadian French are different from traditional French due to the fact that it has been tweaked over the…

Pierre Trudeau Pierre Trudeau, former Prime Minister of Canada, was once described as "A French Canadian proud of his identity and culture, yet a biting critic of French-Canadian society, determined to destroy its mythology and illusions". He has also been identified as "A staunch, upholder of provincial autonomy holding the justice portfolio in the federal government". Such cumulative appraisal and observation made by past fellow bureaucrat provides high testimonial for the ex-Democratic Socialist. This critique will establish and dispute the prime directives that Trudeau had advocated in his own book written during the years 1965 to 1967. The compilation of political essays featured in his book deal with the diverse complexities of social, cultural and economical issues that were predominant in Canadian politics during the mid 1960's.…

A great Prime Minister should always do what is right for Canada, no matter what obstacles he or she faces. Looking at the fifteen years he was in power, Pierre Elliot Trudeau did exactly that. For instance, he implemented the Official Languages Act and made bilingualism law. In another case, he put an end to the October Crisis by putting into effect the War Measures Act. Finally, Trudeau amended the Constitution which gave Canadians a Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Pierre Elliot Trudeau was a successful Prime Minister who accomplished his goals despite facing enormous opposition.…

    Canadian Culture Essay

One can safely argue that the Canadian government was solely trying to protect its economy and its citizens. An important foundation of the global and political economy of any country is, of course, its people. Politics is fundamentally about how society and its people are organised in and for public life. A people are better understood by their culture and that culture helps to define and be defined by politics. To understand the politics of a society therefore requires understanding its culture, that is, the ways of life of its people - their beliefs, practices and values - and how these impact on politics and the global economy.
