Campus Housings Beliefs
My first thoughts on the ROC were those of slight confusion. Since move in day I had thought the only reason we as a student body were supposed to live in the dorms was simply to keep the university housing system afloat. However, after reading the “ROC” and the platform which it made, in the statement regarding campus housings beliefs that, Campus living will enhance our growth and development as a student at UW stout. This statement makes a lot of sense to me as I personally hold the belief that college is make or break.
I’ve seen friends buckle under the pressure of school work and turn to irresponsible solutions which, in the end never help or solve their problems. That being said campus housings statement relates to that point because

One of the key reasons I joined my fraternity is because they preached the message of “the true gentleman,” which I believe will further my personal following of these principles; as we are encouraged to act selflessly, respectfully, and to promote civility in ourselves and our society. Furthermore, at home I was taught that taking responsibility for any of your actions and that accepting the consequence, was what changed you from a boy to a man. Civility was another big piece of what was taught to me. Whether it be politeness, good etiquette or being just being courteous. However no one is perfect and in this instance I slipped …show more content…
I was upset of losing a father figure that was the old RA, and because I to some degree associated his antisocial tendencies with him not liking or not caring about the students who I believed he was supposed to provide insight or advice too. As a result of my frustration and by the nature of me wanting to play a joke (which I later realized was not funny,) I came to the conclusion that hurling an egg at Harrison North’s door would be a good idea. Not thinking much of it, I admitted to the deed carried out when I was questioned by Harrison after work. I admitted to the police when they arrived momentarily afterward. After some confusion to why the situation was handled so seriously Harrison had us go to a group meeting in which he described how he had been struggling with school and life and such. He was very sympathetic in his explanation of his situation and offered us an ultimatum: Follow the rules and we can have a fun year, or continue on the same path with more strict enforcement of the rules. We drew the conclusion that following the rules would be a better solution. He seemed somewhat distraught, and nervous about mentioning my incident so I took the liberty of bringing it up to the whole floor and apologizing to him in front of everyone, which I think was a turning point within our relationship. I’ve tried to really turn a new leaf with Harrison by always saying hi, making small talk, and

On March 23rd, 2017, Kendra Tew, a Community Assistant at The Varsity Housing, authorized a preliminary study that addresses the feasibility of introducing a Dunkin’ Donuts store in the vacant medium-sized retail space that is available near the main entrance of the complex as well as survey that indicates the number of prospective customers around the area. This question continues to raise a compelling argument to this very day. The University of Notre Dame has a total of 30 dorms and they are broken down to 16 male-only and 14 female-only. The article discusses the situation of on campus housing is too expensive for low class family and/or poor families. Sometime because of residential expenses student are not able to go to the college/ university they wish to go. That was one thing that really pop out to me because if the university accepts you then they should provide an on campus housing area where low income student can live. Then the question arose why accept more student who has low income if you have lack of housing for them to live in. Crowley article stated that housing plays an important role for child development and it can affect how well the student performs in the university. Trotter agrees with Crowley and speaks more on the situation for low income housing. Public…

    Why Housing Matters

Immeasurable times a person’s outlook on education can be limited to just reading, writing, sciences, and math, leaving them close minded on assisting the community around them. Fr. Pedro Arrupe’s statement, ‘‘our prime educational objective must be to form men and women for others, who believe that a love of self or of God which does not issue forth in justice for the least of their neighbors is a farce.’’ is concluding that we, as citizens, should focus our primary education on being a well-rounded person. With that said, the best way to put forth our best self is to work to be sure everyone in our communities is provided with basic necessities that are essential to help one live. I have witnessed this first hand with my own sister, Jessica…

Everyday there are students applying to colleges across the world, and some even choose close to their own homes. Parents love the thought of saving money even when it involves education, because everyone knows how expensive it can be. Although students will leave behind the common experience most students get to enjoy while living in a dorm during college like the activities, parties, and being able to be around your friends a large amount of the time. Living at home during your college years rather than staying in a dorm is very beneficial. It can give students a great amount of time to bond with their family, while living in a dorm gives students privacy. Students don’t have their family constantly calling their name to do something for them, or just intruding in on them. According to Kristen Graham, she states “ And you learn a lot about how to be an adult when your parents aren’t telling you how important it is to study and you find out for yourself” (12-23). Because of students living in a dorm without their parents it gives students more time to focus on studying, only most don’t take their time from what being away from home can give them into consideration, leaving them will a ton of homework to fulfill when the dead line arrives faster than expected. Being at home, parents are usually on top of their child’s back making sure they are being successful in school, asking questions constantly about their child’s homework and if they are passing their classes.…

Dorm life. Most of us will go through college with the life changing experience of living in the dorms. Although it's mandatory for freshmen to live in the dorm, the social life of it is not too bad. The one major problem most face though is the meal plan. Meal plans are designed to allow students the freedom to eat anywhere on campus and not worry about having cash. There are many options to choose from on campus and the meal plan covers all of our restaurants. Meal plans are based on a weekly cycle and will reset each Sunday at midnight. "Meals" may be used at Couch Restaurants, which is an all-you-care-to-eat facility. When Couch Restaurants are closed you may use a meal for meal exchange at any of our other dining…

Barbra Duffield is the National Association for the Education of Homeless Children and Youth executive director. Duffield makes a statement, “once the state and federal responsibility to homeless kids stop- at the end of high school - it’s as if they ease to exist. The fall off the map” (712). The author convinces the audience that this should be justified by having a legal policy change to overcome this obstacle. Another convincing aspect Bader used is referencing Aesha as an example for a person who advocated for a school needing to provide more for their student. Aesha states, “They have a childcare center on my campus, but they only accept children two and up…It would have helped if I could have brought my son to daycare at school” (712). This proves that housing facilities even if they are temporary or only for part of the day can truly help a student achieve academic…

Housing is one of the most important elements of the society. A healthy society always needs to have healthy housing for the people of their community. Housing has always been a topic of interest to me. Previously to being an ECE student, I graduated the Social Service Worker program from St. Lawrence College in Kingston. After graduating the SSW program, I worked in a soup kitchen that served food to the homeless population of Kingston. Each shift that I worked, the topic of housing was conversed at least twice in four hours. I worked with families, single mothers, and a large population of men with mental illnesses. These people always spoke about being on the housing list and how long they have been on it. They were eager to have a place…

Living on campus is another stressful aspect of my life as a college student. Even though there is a sense of freedom that comes with having your own place to live, it still is a large responsibility to manage. Paying rent while also taking maintaining a stable living environment takes quite a bit of effort and, fortunately, I have survived at least one semester. I’m glad I’ve taken on this task, however, as it’s yet another example of the ways that I have continued to prepare myself for larger responsibilities down the…

My first weeks at VT gave me the opportunity to meet a senior student named Jeremy in front of West AJ (my dorm). He was smoking a cigarette and enjoying the weather outside. I asked him for a lighter and if he was living here. He was actually on the same floor as me. I was pretty surprised to meet a senior living on campus and he seemed pretty convinced that it is the best place to live when you are in college. I couldn’t believe him. He stated certain points which can be considered as convenient such as having a fast access to all your classes. Everything is closer. You are five minutes away from all dining halls, the health center and even from the library where you can find all academic resources. All your friends are near and you feel like you are living in a certain community. You meet people you know randomly all the time. But I added,…

Living on-campus will allow you to meet more people and establish more friendships than if you live off-campus. Living in a dorm means that there will always be someone around to hang out with. You will also usually be aware of any campus activities and how to be involved in them. For example, you are doing homework on your desk, and your neighbor stop by telling you there is a cook out just started near the library. So you can either keep working or throw up your pen and go have a hotdog. That is not easy if you live off-campus.…
