Brothers By Andrew Forster And Sister Maude By Christina Georgian Rossetti
Brothers by Andrew Forster and Sister Maude by Christina Georgian Rossetti. The two poems I am comparing are Brothers and Sister Maude. Both are about siblings, except Andrew Forster’s poem is about how he left his younger brother on his own when they were going into the town as children, and how this has affected their relationship later on in life. Sister Maude is about bitter sister rivalry and how ‘Sister Maude’ tells on her sister about her lover.
Both poems are about siblings and how they get along in life. Even though both poems are about sibling rivalry to a degree, ‘Sister Maude’ was probably written a hundred years before ‘Brothers’. This unfortunately shows that sibling rivalry will forever go on no matter what.
‘Brothers’ is a typical modern poem, set in a simple form, with five lines and three stanzas. Like most modern poems there is no rhyming scheme. It is more like free flowing words, which is similar to the way someone runs, anyone who has read the poem would know that this is an effective device used by Forester as a part of the poem has Forster and his brothers running in it ‘you spring towards the gate’ The way the poem is set is similar to the way a child runs, the lines start as enjambment but similar to how a child get tired after running, at the end of a stanza it becomes end-stop, just like a child.
The poem uses many poetic devices to make it relatable to the reader. The words ‘Olympic Gold’ is effective as it brings in a common reference point into the poem, making the poem more relatable and easier to understand to the reader. It is also very a good reference point at the moment as soon London will be holding the 2012 Olympics. Making the poem even easier for the modern reader to understand.
The alliteration and assonance in the poem are crucial in giving the poem some rhyme so it can make it easier for the reader to read it. ‘Spouting six-year-old views’. This is alliteration of ‘s’.

The first line in the second stanza has a break after “words” accentuated by a comma putting emphasis on the word “words” and slowing the rhythm of that sentence. In “bravely clear” there is a reversed letter pattern “el” and “le”, which makes the words flow together. The words “child”, “night”, “some” and “small” are repeated throughout this poem perhaps to emphasize these words. There may be a connection between “child” and “thing” since both words are preceded by the word “small”. In lines ten and eleven there is internal rhyming with the words “listening”, “dreaming” and “thing” which have the same “ing” ending. The author uses alliteration in “some” and “small” which draws the two words together. In the last line there is…

The most obvious similarity of Harmonium and Brothers is that they have no rhyme scheme, which is a very common practice in contemporary poems and makes the writing feel less restrictive and much more human. In the two poems the description of the relationship is actually explained at the final stanza while the previous stanza appears to set the scene and happen to reflect the speakers thoughts, such as how the harmonium in Harmonium has ‘soft wood case’ and ‘yellow the fingernails of its keys’ which is actually explaining the son’s deep down worries of how his father is slowly ageing…

Furthermore they both include the reality of family life as the poems are realistic and the poems, especially Nettles, have both the love and misery of family relationships. In Nettles the love in the poem is the protective instincts of a parent towards his son but the misery is the Nettles that had hurt his child and the fact that being protective isn’t enough to stop him from getting hurt. The realistic relationship in Harmonium is the family resentment and frustration from a son to his father. We can tell that the writer resents and is frustrated by his father as it says “and he being him can’t help but say.......... and I, being me” which shows that he is frustrated at their relationship. However the Harmonium is used to describe his father so therefore his family life whereas in Nettles it is reversed. The Nettles, that had caused pain for the boy, is actually describing soldiers and war therefore the underlying message is not about family but about war and the underlying message in Harmonium is not about the Harmonium but about family.…
