Book Report: 8 Mile
”8 mile”

I think the story starts with a flop at “The Shelter” for Jimmy, to show his development during the movie as he gets accepted in the end.
“The Shelter” is a little battle place in Detroit and it is marked by the environment which is dirty and poor. All the people who normally go there come in groups and they are black. Because of that it is very hard for white people like Jimmy to be accepted, because the black people don’t have any respect for him.
The doorman means that Jimmy has got an “attitude problem” because Jimmy does not listen to him in the entrance but actually it is the doorman who has got it, because he doesn’t consider Jimmy to be important.

But Jimmy has still some good friends who help and support him all the time.
Jimmy’s friends have their own roles. Future is the leader of the group, he believes in Jimmy and the rest of the group has a lot of respect for him.
DJ Iz is a “hippie man”. That means he speaks in a philosophical way and takes it easy all the time. Perhaps he is also the wisest person of them.
Cheddar is the strange and crazy one and perhaps a little stupid too.
Sol (George) is the one with the smallest self-confidence and he is shy but with a very big heart.
Even though Jimmy behaves cool towards his friends and everybody else, he is actually very loving and caring e.g. to his sister and Cheddar when he came home from the hospital. It shows that Jimmy is more sensible and likable than he seems to be.

The film ended before I expected it. In my opinion the film should have shown more about Jimmy’s future life, how he would manage after the battle and something about what would happen with him and Alex.
I think the message of the film is that if you dream about something and really want it, it can be real if you work hard for it. And even though the life seems really bad it can be changed to something better.

His training focused more on marching in line and following preset rules and strategies rather than adapting to the environment and motivating his subordinates. Though he led the Alpha Company, he never truly belonged to his company and he separated himself from his subordinates, as his way of maintaining superiority as he could not have attained the authority he had among his subordinates were it not for his rank. After the death of Lavender, he increasingly relies on standard operating procedures to persuade himself of his competence and exonerate himself from the personal responsibility he feels for his death. The story explains that Jimmy signed to join the military out of impulse as his friends had decided to join the military. He fails to cultivate the sense of personal responsibility that it takes to lead his subordinates and he often ignores his responsibilities by drifting into a daydream. He did want to join the military and he did not desire to be a leader of his company.…

Jimmy Valentine is the main character of this story. Jimmy was a criminal, intelligent, and clever. Jimmy was sentenced to prison for four years because he robbed banks. After only 10 months, he was pardoned by the governor and released. He had returned to his home and gathered his safe-opening instruments. Jimmy then proceeded to burglarize a bank in Richmond, Indiana. And again, he robbed a bank in Jefferson City and purloined five hundred dollars. Ben Price was a detective who sent Jimmy to jail. Ben was instructed to find Jimmy after they determined he had robbed the banks. First some people might argue that Jimmy still did bad things once he got out of prison, but even though he did not do good right when he got out, he still ended up doing good, just not right away; change does not happen fast, it takes time. Some people might also argue that Jimmy only planned to get married to the banker's daughter so he could steal from the bank. This is not true though because if he wanted to he could of a very long time ago, Jimmy never did steal from them, and he liked Annabel before he even knew she was the banker's daughter. The last reason people might argue about is that Jimmy was not honest the entire time, and lied to Annabel about the tools and what was inside the suitcase. But this was just because he was afraid that if he told them, then everyone would find out about Jimmy's past, and then might not of been able to get married to Annabel. Also, the only reason he even had the tools with him was because he was planning on giving them away, not to use them. All the evidence clearly shows that Jimmy Valentine was now dedicated to living a moral life.…

The other main character, Jimmy Dugan, played by actor Tom Hanks, was the manager of the Rockford Peaches. Although he was portrayed early on as rude and arrogant, he eventually had a change of heart. With that in mind, Jimmy Dugan can be mostly associated with the ethics of virtue because this system is not based on one’s actions, but the moral character of that person. We can see that deep down, he is a very caring person. However, sometimes his actions do not display the truth of his personal moral character.…
