Jimmy Valentine Research Paper
People are always changing, so even one of the worst criminals around could end up becoming one of the best people around. Jimmy Valentine was a very good bank robber; he could break into any safe with ease. Now, Jimmy Valentine has changed his name to “Ralph Spencer,” but not only did he changed his name he changed his life. Jimmy Valentine did many things that changed his lifestyle; he gave away all his tools that he used to break into banks, he planned to get married, and he broke into a safe to save a child and not to steal anything.
The first reason that showed Jimmy was dedicated to living a moral life is that he gave away all his tools he used to rob banks. First of all not only did Jimmy get rid of his tools he gave them away, he didn’t

This is shown when in the text it says; “Jimmy Valentine looked into her eyes, forgot who he was, and became a different man.” This quote also shows the first time Jimmy started to change a little bit. Also the woman Jimmy planned to get married to was the banker's daughter, this is shown in the text when it says: “She’s Annabel Adams. Her pa owns this bank.” This quote affected him changing because Jimmy liked Annabel before even knew that her dad owned the bank, and if Jimmy wanted to be with her he would have to change his ways, and stop robbing banks or else Jimmy wouldn’t be able to spend the rest of his life with Annabel. Also Jimmy needed to focus on his family and job, this is shown in the text when it says; “Billy, I’ve quit the old business--a year ago. I’ve got a nice store. I’m making an honest living, and I’m going to marry the finest girl on earth two weeks from now, It’s the only life Billy--the straight one.” Jimmy no longer had time to deal with all the crime anymore, and he was already making enough money, so he didn't have …show more content…
First some people might argue that Jimmy still did bad things once he got out of prison, but even though he did not do good right when he got out, he still ended up doing good, just not right away; change does not happen fast, it takes time. Some people might also argue that Jimmy only planned to get married to the banker's daughter so he could steal from the bank. This is not true though because if he wanted to he could of a very long time ago, Jimmy never did steal from them, and he liked Annabel before he even knew she was the banker's daughter. The last reason people might argue about is that Jimmy was not honest the entire time, and lied to Annabel about the tools and what was inside the suitcase. But this was just because he was afraid that if he told them, then everyone would find out about Jimmy's past, and then might not of been able to get married to Annabel. Also, the only reason he even had the tools with him was because he was planning on giving them away, not to use them. All the evidence clearly shows that Jimmy Valentine was now dedicated to living a moral life.
Jimmy Valentine did a lot of good in his life; therefore, he was truly dedicated to living a moral life because he gave away all his tools he used to break into banks, he planned to get married, he broke into a safe to

Emmy the chambermaid stole the necklace because she was jealous. First of all, the glass from the broken window in the door is scattered outside the room. This shows that the job was clearly done from someone on the inside. It’s important to notice this because it rules out the neighbor as the criminal. For if it was Honore’ Schmidt--coming into the hotel room from the balcony--the glass would have to be inside the room from him punching the glass in. That leaves only Emmy and Mrs. Van Bliven herself. So the second reason is that the chambermaid has a more realistic reason to have stolen the necklace. And that is jealousy of Mrs. Van Bliven’s wealth. From what can be acquired from the description of the woman and the crime scene itself, it is no secret that Horatio Van Bliven is a rich lady. Not to…

Jimmy, although he is word smart, both his mother and father are number smart which landed him a place in the compounds. Oryx on the other hand grew up very poor and was sold at a young age. People where she lived sold their children to make some money to be able to survive. As Oryx is telling Jimmy about her childhood, he is getting angry because he does not like the way she was treated and he does not believe that she should have been sold. Oryx was trying to ignore Jimmy when he kept asking for her to go on with the story and about when she was sold when she finally replied saying “‘You don’t understand,’… ‘Many people did it. It was the custom.’” (Atwood). The fact that Oryx was saying that selling children was a normal thing to do in her town infers that no one cared what was happening. No one in the lower class cared because they could not have done anything anyways because of their own standings, most likely they would be in the same situation. On the other side, no one in the upper class was there trying to help any of those families. While poor families resulted…

Jimmy is likable and one definitely roots for him. He undergoes a solid character arc when he realizes why he hasn’t been able to commit (page 79). His inner conflict is about his father. However, there’s room to make Jimmy more realistic and charming. Consider making him less child-like and instead make him more cynical. Also, make the connection that Jimmy has been “impersonating” a fake life (psychologically). He needs to verbalize this to Ellen and he has to learn to also be himself.…

Jimmy was not ready for war because he was too young to attend at war. It is hard for a soldier to see the pain of others especially in a war. People die in a war, get injured, get wounded and it is a huge thing to handle which Jimmy was not ready for. He always, was wondering about Martha which kept him away to feel the actual war and helped him to keep his mind off from the war. In the text it says, “On occasion he would yell at his men to spread out the column, to keep their eyes open, but then he would slip away into daydreams, just pretending, walking barefoot along the Jersey shore.” (Tom O’Brien 488) In other words, once he starts thinking of her, it becomes difficult to stop that he goes deep into his imagination which take his mind off from the war. He even feels annoy to be in the war, which is why he sometimes becomes irritated to be disturbed by the war which distract him to stop thinking about the daydreams he was…

Jimmy Porter operates out of a deep well of anger. His anger is directed at those he loves because they refuse to have strong feelings, at a society that did not fulfill promises of opportunity, and at those who smugly assume their places in the social and power structure and who do not care for others. He lashes out in anger because of his deeply felt helplessness. When he was ten years old he watched his idealist father dying for a year from wounds received fighting for democracy in the Spanish Civil War, his father talking for hours, "pouring out all that was left of his life to one bewildered little boy." He says, "You see, I learnt at an early age what…
