This essay was by far my favorite essay I’ve ever read. It really hit home with me because I have a brother that I am super close to and we spent a lot of our time as kids playing any sort of ball. I believe Duncan’s heartwarming essay was to alert people about the concept of searching for happiness in “the finer things” when for the most part; happiness can come from the simplest things. This was something that really hit home for me because I was raised by a family that discouraged possession and encouraged enjoying what we already had. This has been something that’s stuck true with me till this day and I’m beyond grateful for that. The main thing that really grabbed my attention from this essay was the bond that David has with his brother Duncan. His admiration for his brother was really inspiring and gave me an instant connection to the story. Following his brother’s death, he receives a signed baseball from Mickie Mantle (his boyhood idol) and David is crushed at the thought of it. David continues through his life never fully being able to harness his emotions over the idea of his dead brother never being able to see the precious ball that was his. The ball itself represents “the good life” or “the finer things” and David’s perspective is completely focused on the fact that his brother will never see that ball that he would have loved. One day he finally comes to the realization that the ball signed by Mickie Mantle was simply that, a ball. Duncan loved playing catch with his brother immensely more than a dumb ball signed by Mickie Mantle. This truly brought tears to my eyes as I read it because I have that connection with my brother and there is just nothing else like it. I truly feel for David Duncan.…

The walls are controlling symbols of the story; in fact some had said that it's a parable of walls. Melville tells us explicitly that certain prosaic facts are indispensable to understand a story (Leo Marx 1970). One of the walls, which is part of sky-light shaft, is white. And it provides the best light available, with the sky invisible. There is no direct rays from the sun penetrate the building. At the other end the wall is in an everlasting shade, and is black with age. As the narrator say, the walls have something in common: they are equally "deficient in what landscape painters call ‘life'." "The difference in color is less important than the fact that what we see through each window is just a wall" (Marx). Those walls are the walls that Bartleby stared at for hours everyday. Is it the lifeless view he stared at that made his soul lifeless, the walls that made him give up on life?…

There are certain symbols in the text such as the train being late, the bird drowning in the puddle, and the three phone calls the family gets at midnight which are significant to the story. First, the train being late is symbolic because; in my opinion; if the train wasn 't late they wouldn 't of had to wait forever for the bus and they would have seen their son. When the parents finally arrived to the hospital; to see their son on his birthday; they were told “he had attempted to take his life. He was all right...but a visit might disturb him.”(1) This is symbolic because if the train wasn 't late they would have got to see their son. It seems like the son felt he was being abandoned on his birthday so he decided to end his life. If the train wouldn 't have broken down then the family would have been reunited. Second, the bird drowning in the puddle is symbolic because the baby bird was not able to fly. “A tiny half-dead unfledged bird was helplessly twitching in a puddle.”(2) the son used to draw pictures of birds with human hands and feet, and his roommate thought when he was trying to kill himself he was trying to fly. The reason this is symbolic is because the son is pretty much a little bird trying to fly, but not ever being able to so giving up on life. Third, The three phone calls at midnight is symbolic because in my opinion those phone calls are the hospital calling to tell the family their son has succeeded. “The telephone rang again.”(6) that’s when the story ends leaving you to interpret who was…

Looking to my left the wall is mainly covered by a large floor length mirror. Above my mirror is a picture my friends and I playing in the grassy field behind my dad’s house where I grew up. Beside that is my black and white clock. I hear it tick, tock, tick, tock every day and every night. Below my tick, tock clock is a wooden decoration that says: A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. I love this wall the most because I can see who I am, where I came from, and who, and what I care most about.…
