Blackberry Jam Narrative
A week ago me and my friends decided to go the infamous Dr. John's Blackberry Jam in Atlanta we’ve been going for a couple years now mainly for the hip hop jazz and classical. But the last time we went something strange happened while my friends Daquan, Jessica, and Justin went to get some cokes. We had arrived late because of traffic and parking and the hot summer day made us feel very drained. As we walked into the gate we saw about six hundred thousand people of all ethnicities and religions it was very diverse and caught a lot of people’s attention by the music genres, love, fun, and positivity message it spread. Everyone was wearing neon necklaces, shoes, shirts, hats and headbands because we were instructed to wear bright colors so at night it would look cool and glow when it gets dark. We had finally made it to the entrance even with our snail paced walking. The instructor gave us a map and our wrist bands and told us to head to a spot in the middle of the festival. Justin who was very enthusiastic and popular typically wore …show more content…
On his way to the entrance, he scraped his knees on the concrete by running after his son and friends. Got tired of running stopped and rested and that’s how they’re here looking for him now. I laughed after he told me the story it reminded me of Justin’s grandpa who used to always chase after us when we snuck out in middle school to go to a skating ring in the middle of the night. His story surprisingly gave me hope for the future by reminding that some kids still get out and become active with their

Described as “dual citizens,” the brass band performers have two drastically different identities (5). Although their performances enable them to be “exceptional icons,” these musicians suffer from poverty. They struggle to earn a living, as they are paid with little salaries. Most of the musicians are not full-time performers; in order to keep the livelihood, they cannot focus solely on their career. During the “New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival,” Keith Frazier, the member of Rebirth Brass Band, questions that “‘We know who we are. Do you know who we are?’” (100). The musicians themselves have a clear interpretation of their duality. However, there is a confusion of identities from the outsiders’ view. People focus only on their iconic appearance and hardly notice their poverty. As Sakakeeny remarks, it is problematic that the performers are the one who create the brass band culture, while the “cultural economics ends with these same workers, who are the last to receive any financial return” (86). Sakakeeny illustrates several vivid contrasts about musicians’ life stories. That is, the musicians work too much; however, they receive too little. Additionally, their second-line performance exhibits an up-beat tempo and mobilizing atmosphere, while the musicians endure an insecure and tragic life. In order to provide a…

People from different cities, and states come down just for this event. There are six stages, dozens of rides, and a full gallery’s worth of art, cool off zones, vendors, food and beverages. We were surrounded by the smell of popcorn and cotton candy. It felt like the carnival you liked to go to as a kid. Everywhere we went there were people dressed like rainbows. Everybody was dressed in so many colors, and dressed like clowns, with different costumes. The…

Adams Center, Delta Sigma Theta, and Kappa Alpha put on the event on April 28th at the bottom of Adams Center from 6-8pm. The event was open to anyone, and the primary audience was black students and most took place in some aspect of the event, which is really cool. Everyone at the event was quite inviting and made the event enjoyable for me. They started with food that loosely aligned with black culture: gumbo, fried chicken, rice, green beans, mac and cheese, watermelon, and Kool-Aid and punch. It was delicious, and they didn’t run out of food early. The first presentation was a poetry slam about police brutality especially to black individuals. There was also a PowerPoint on repeat that displayed many statistics and facts about the…

In addition, the festival pertained of people bringing in their classic cars to see which car was the best. What shocked me was that men worked months in order to prepare their cars for this festival. They had trophies for the best classic car contest up to 20th place so one can just imagine how many cars surrounded the festival. Also I had the opportunity to listen to live rock n roll music all day. There were different rock n roll bands alternating all day to get to hear a variety of rock n roll music. What I enjoyed most about the music was the fact that some members of the bands were playing unknown instruments to me that introduced me to new sounds and melodies. The bands were even selling their albums to the crowd in order to fundraise for the scholarship.…

My first trip to New Orleans was during the week of Mardi Gras and it was definitely one of the best weeks of my life. We arrived on February 10th, the week before fat Tuesday, to find that Mardi Gras festivities were already well underway. I was shocked at how many people I saw. We went to our hotel, The Royal Sonesta, to check into our room and to get everything situated. Our next stop was The Boot, one of the best college bars in America. I found that the area was flooded with campers parked outside the Landmark Bar. I even saw a police officer help some fraternity brother’s put a keg on top of their camper. On my last day we went to the infamous Bourbon Street. We were greeted with signs saying “Mardi On!”. People were dressed in all sorts…

Motivation is the force. Pinder, cited in Gällstedt (2003), defines motivation as ‘‘a set of energetic forces that originate both within as well as beyond an individual’s being to initiate work-related behaviours, and to determine its form, direction, intensity, and duration’’ (Gällstedt, 2003). Mullins (2008) describes motivation as this force which drives any person to show a specific behaviour towards any condition or situation or things.…

On the day of the much awaited concert it is best to line up early, bring some snacks, water, and your light sticks for the event. Also bring umbrella or raincoat if it is an open grounds concert and don’t forget sunblock (you don’t want to look like overcooked burger patties right?). Some event rules forbid bringing of sharp objects, lasers, DSLR cameras etc. Your brought snacks should be eaten before entering the arena or grounds (they sell hotdogs, MCDO,…

I remember last year one warm, stormy grey afternoon, when I visited the Georgia Aquarium. I was with my immediate family and my little brother’s friend. The drive to get there was very tedious and time consuming due to all the traffic and people walking around. While driving through the streets, we saw many people dressed up for the comic convention. There were super heroes like spider-man dressed in very intricate blue and red, and also star fighters for Star Wars in their all white and black uniforms with the fake replica guns. By the time we finally got somewhat close to the Georgia Aquarium, my brother and his friend had been so bothered with the heat that had snaked its way through the car that they finally got out of the car and walked. This left my remaining family and I to find a parking space.…

    Orange Crush

The date of the second Orange Crush also has some local ministers concerned. With April 19 being the day before Easter and a Sunday sunrise service standard for Tybee’s beach, the Rev. Joyce Hall of Garden City wants to do what she can to put a little religion into the traditionally party-heavy atmosphere. “Our goal is not to terminate the party or to say they can’t have fun,” said Rev. Joyce Hall. “Let’s change the nature of it. I believe we can do that as a community,” (Coleman, Dash 2014). “Our issue is behavior, respect the rules,” said Tybee City Manager Diane Schleicher. “It’s not about the influx of people,” (Coleman, Dash2014) since this is an unofficial event, most Tybee residents look it down upon. “The annual event organized via social media draws thousands of people to the beach each spring, many of them young and plenty of them there to cut loose. It typically elicits a lukewarm response from some of the island’s residents, who complain of the noise, safety issues and, in recent years, trash pickup associated with the partying. While significant litter on the beach surrounding the party area was a source of public outcry the last two years, Tybee officials said they didn’t haul away nearly as much garbage as they did after the Fourth of July.” (Coleman,Dash 2014)…

As early as 7 o’clock in the morning, I can already here the chatters of excitements filled with energy as students were talking about the said event at the easyride terminal going for Bajumpandan. And as I hover my eyes around different colours representing their teams can be seen, some are wearing blue, yellow, red and green clothings respectively. But I’m proud to say I belong in the blue team. As the ride is going on still, the chit-chats doesn’t end with matching ‘pindot-pindot’ with their cellphones or tablets, jaja if I know they’re just doing the so called group message. Then fortunately we’ve just arrived before the time. For that, we spent several minutes waiting for our classmates and as well as our leader to give and let her sign our gate pass’.…
