Biomedical Science: Personal Statement
My interest in Biomedical Science came about around four years ago when my dad was diagnosed with Non Hodgkin's Lymphoma. He was treated with an intense course of chemotherapy and during this time it had me thinking about how and why a mutation in a cell can grow and cause a tumour and also how chemotherapy treatment can destroy the mutated cells (along with some healthy cells) and cause a person to have side effects such as skin discolouration, hair loss, loss of appetite and a lowered immune system. To be able to explore more in depth into what the body does has intrigued me to delve deeper. This is why I have chosen to study a degree in Biomedical Science. I had been out of education for quite a while, so in order to follow my chosen path …show more content…
As a mature student I feel that I am much more focused in regards to what I want from life now that I have had time to reflect and the more I think about it the more I want to go out and do it. I feel that I know more about myself and I am quite a confident person. I enjoy a challenge to be able to widen my mind and I believe that I have the right qualities and attitude to become a hard working university student. I have enquired at my local hospital about any work experience that might be available for me to do within their pathology lab. In my past work places I have worked in residential care homes taking care of the elderly and I have also worked with adults with learning disabilities. Each of these jobs were very enjoyable. It gave me confidence, I gained great team working skills and also learned to work alone. It enabled me to work on my communication skills, to be able to communicate with the clients and their families was a necessity. I have many hobbies but I can just never find the spare time to fit them in, I do enjoy going to Basefit with my sister and a few friends a couple of times a

I have always been a person who has found herself torn between the love of chemistry and biology. The manner by which all natural schemes of the human body work and even methods by which they could be manipulated to create something desirable, to where one can produce the answers to someone's problem is such a powerful and a blessed ability. At fourteen years, I was a dedicated, immensely caring, and vibrant young lady with great dreams aspiring to become a medical doctor. For the final two years of secondary school, I successfully…

As I researched Creighton University School of Medicine, I discovered a school with a rich history, an innovative curriculum, and a mission statement that aligns with my personal interests and goals. I was further impressed that although Creighton University School of Medicine opened its doors to students over 120 years ago, the school understands that medicine is a continually evolving field and is dedicated to preparing students for these changes.…

I can still vividly recall the eleven-year-old me fawning over the likes of Lawrence Krauss and Neil Degrasse Tyson. I was completely immersed in everything and anything pertaining to the vast universe beyond our seemingly insignificant world. I thought I had it all figured out. I would devote my life to being an astrophysicist and eventually earn my PhD. I would relish in the pink lettering on my wall that said “Dr. Mia”, but as I approach my late teens, my mind has been bombarded with what-ifs and buts. Irrespective of my change of heart, I still have an intense passion for math and science since it is how we explain the world around us, and that is why I have settled on biomedical engineering.…

I was introduced to the field I am interested in from my 9th grade biology class. Prior to the course, I had never taken biology or any science, for that matter, that had captured my attention such as this year-long experience. I was intrigued by the subject and fascinated with all the advances in society that have been made by scientists throughout the years. The possibility of being able to do this in the future kept me engaged and I further pursued this interest by currently taking AP Biology. In addition, I was inspired by the change that scientists can make through research and…

I am interested in pursing the major I chose above because I have developed a passion for medicine through my own health obstacles. I suffer from Chronic Migraines, which has caused me to spend a great deal of my life in doctor's offices. Positive experiences with my doctors lead to me idolizing them as a young child; so much so that I memorized the every bone in the body at the age of five. This passion stayed alive and well as I grew older, however my admiration began to transition from the doctors themselves to the subject. This all stemmed from my own health; I wanted to know exactly what was happening with my body and why. Now, I want to dedicate my life to the subject and possibly be the doctor that inspires someone to discover their…

Growing up, seeing my mother and godmother aspiring to become medical assistants began to enhance my interest in the medical field. Skimming through their textbooks intrigued me on how the human body is extremely complex yet I found it to be so captivating. As time progressed, I became even more intrigued in pursuing a career in the medical field. Thus, when I was accepted to Hillcrest High School’s Pre-Med Program I was elated to see that I was now one step closer. Taking rigorous science courses such as Anatomy, Med-Lab and Microbiology, heightened my enthusiasm as I had finally begun to prepare for my future endeavours. Conducting experiments such as pig dissections, growing bacteria on a petri dish and others intoxicated me with excitement for…

Biology fascinates me, simply because we are only able to live, think, and question because of it. It is, quite literally, the foundation of our existence. The academic pursuit to understand the messy and complex logic of life, at the molecular, cellular and organismal level, deeply appeals to me. I am particularly interested in Biomedical Science, as it delves deeper into human biology, and applies the scientific knowledge gleaned to help with disease understanding and treatment. I was piqued by what I had studied in biology class, on gene function and the problems associated with its dysfunction, thus I have explored some extracurricular material.…

I chose these topics because I have an interest in how biology can be used to help people outside the realm of mainstream medicine. In addition, these issues are not regularly exposed to the media in a positive light so I feel that not many people know about the potential benefits of these new technologies. For work experience, I completed a week in my local pharmacy in which I worked alongside the pharmacists and pharmacy assistants. In this week, I developed my computer and organisation skills and I feel this gives me relevant experience to excel in my course. This experience helped me gain a greater understanding of the inner workings of a pharmacy.…

When I think about my future medical career, I imagine one involving specialized patient care and research in an urban setting. For this reason, I am especially interested in academic medicine. Having an opportunity to learn from physicians and patients in an academic center such as New York University (NYU) Langone Medical Center will provide me with the comprehensive training necessary to fulfill my aspirations. I am particularly fascinated in the field of radiation oncology. Watching as the physicians at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) cared for and interacted with their patients and, subsequently, investigated novel methods to optimize radiation therapy solidified my interest in this specialty. I am also interested in research…

I have always been interested in Science and its associated subjects from infancy. It is no surprise I have exceptional interest in studying Diagnostic Radiography due to its practical science nature. My curiosity in practical science grew after my first dispersion of light by a triangular prism experiment. As a child, I was curious about the formation of rainbow and tried to workout how the rainbow is formed. My desire for science made me reject an offer from one of the prestigious colleges in Ghana to study Business to one of the deprived areas in Ghana to study Science. Studying Science in Ghana with shortage of teachers and limited resources did not deter me from studying hard and eventually graduating as the best Science Student from my college. Furthermore, I represented the college in the National Science and Mathematics Quiz program.…
