Benji: When the Young Die Young
Life Is Too Short

As the years go by, the numbers of murders and kidnappings of the younger generation have increase tremendously. People became more cruel and cold-hearted towards one another. The life’s of the young people are being cut short before they can even reach a turning point in life for the better due to the act of violence. For instance, I watched a documentary called Benji. The film is about a teenage boy named Ben Wilson, who is a phenomenon basketball player but his life was cut short due to careless act of violence. Ben Wilson was a nationally ranked number one for basketball. He had a relentless drive to be the best or be better than the next. As his neighbor, Common says, “Ben was chosen”. Even though he was tremendously talented and basketball was his ticket out, the streets of South Chicago were viciously being taking over by gangs. He didn’t let that stop his shine or goals. By Ben’s junior year in high school he became Simeon’s main attraction but he didn’t allow the fame to take him out of his character. He stayed focus and kept his head in the books. As he was fighting the battle on the court, the battle outside of the court became more critical in the streets. The drug war and gang affiliation increased rapidly and soon enough a gang called the Disciples took over his neighborhood. As Ben entered into his senior year on a verge of winning another state championship and at the peak of his high school career, it would soon come to a deadly end. November 20, 1984 started off as any normal day. Erica Murphy, Ben’s classmate, said, “I could tell Benji wasn’t his self that day”. Teammates say that he and his girlfriend were having issues about the baby. His teammates says, “That day I was walking into school and he was walking out of Simeon. So I asked, “Where you going”, and Ben replied, “I’m going to walk my girl to the bus stop”. All of a sudden people hear, “BANG BANG”. As a result of a senseless act of violence Ben

Studies show that parents are six times more likely to kill their children than children are to kill their parents. But these facts are changing. The number of adolescents in jail has doubled over the past ten years and 115,000 of these arrests were for violent crimes. Michael D. Kelleher, author of When Good Kids Kill, has looked into cases of teenage violence and why they happen. What happens when a good kid decides to murder? What causes the radical and almost instantaneous change in their behavior? And most importantly, what can we do as a society to change it?…

Violence has been taught since childhood, everywhere people go, everywhere people look, violence is surrounding us in daily life. Throughout the years violence has become a dangerous trend. People use violence everyday as a sense of protection and even because it seems like the thing to do. Violence is so widespread it has become normal, and society is slowly becoming numb to the idea that violence is making our world worse. Many innocent people are being killed and questions are not being asked as well as the right actions are not being taken for the people using violence illogically. When reports come in saying someone was murdered there is always an excuse for a criminal’s actions. Usually the person is mentally ill, had a rough childhood, or saw things as a child that made them use violence. Whether a person is in their right mind or not, violence is not acceptable. Violence is unsafe for our world and makes society live in fear because they worry about the possibility of dying each day. Living in a world where a culture of violence is accepted as the norm will always bring fear to the world. This violence makes us feel like the end is near, and as time goes on it will bring about an apocalypse.…

As I hop off my car to walk to the front gate of my school, all I hear is “OH! BEAT HER UP I HEARD THEY BE TALKING ABOUT YOU BEHIND YOUR BACK!” You see people being friends tell each other secrets and laughing to them fighting each other up not caring if anything happens to the other person. Seeing violence at a young age can affect a person to such a place never imagined. You start learning all types of ways to self-defend yourself. Now or later by seeing violence happening so much you would think killing a person would be a common schedule. How violence affected my life? It made me scared. So scared that I would never let go of my mom anywhere I went. Even if it meant going to the mailbox. Eventually you must face that; violence is everywhere and you must embrace it and not let it affect you in many ways. Violence happens everywhere. It’s over the news, internet, social media websites, school, everywhere you look there’s violence. By making fun of how someone is dressed or looks is violence. Violence can kill anyone or everyone. That person you bullied today, he killed himself right after he came home from school. A person can take so much violence before something happens. There are so many factors of youth violence. Youth violence can be caused by someone thinking it’s cool because other people are doing it. Or it might be caused by drama that developed by Facebook or Twitter. Most of the youth thinks that fighting someone will get there point across better than having to list them. For instance back in the 90’s when Notorious Big and Tupac were still alive. All the fights from the East coast and the West coast. How do you think that started? By either adults or teens trying to get there points across. Violence can be either ridiculous as in fighting for one dollar or be important as in fighting to see who gets America. Most teens haven’t found there place to fit in this world. Most of the teens who finds there place in this world earlier succeed. Instead…

The author has included examples of youth violence and compared the percentage of the homicide rate from 1988 to 1994. One important dimension has clearly changed, youth violence has became more lethal. He mentioned that a massive failure in our social institutions cause these violence young people have so little respect for human life. Most violent behaviour is learned behaviour. Too many youth thought violence is either the only or the effective way to achieve what they need. Early education will influence children and a better learning environment can reduce youth violent behaviour. The author's opinion is very clear, the education during childhood is very important for youths, keep children away from witness violence and physical abuse will decline the risk of later violence. The assay does not interest me, but for some people who are confused about youth violence and for specific presentations and discussion it will be interesting.
