The Media and Our Violent Society As you read a newspaper or watch the news on television, you probably have come to the conclusion that violence is becoming a real serious problem in the world we live in. America has witnessed many acts of violence through the previous years. The media is one of the main causes of violent crimes in America because video games and the internet are sources that expose kids to violence.
Children are exposed to violence through the Internet and the videogames they play which contains several violent aggression. For instance video games can be a bad idea to have your child playing with. I believe that videogames incorporate violence that can influence children to create bad habits, or make bad choices. The internet also has violent aggression that can be shown in many different ways. For example, one of the biggest aggressive behavior that is shown on the internet is cyber bullying. The internet and video games can take part of a big violent crime. There are many different many ways it shown throughout video games and the internet.
By subjecting them to lifelong exposure to such violent video games from “Are We Training Our Kids to Kill,” “a child from South Carolina who was facing the death penalty” (489). Apparently the child and his friend decided it would be fun to rob the local convenience store. Eventually, the child pointed a snub-nosed .38 pistol at the clerk’s head and was killed. The interactive videogames has conditioned him to shoot a gun to kill. The child has spent hundreds of dollars on videogames learning to point and shoot. The child is committing the violent acts; it can affect a child’s thought patterns. Dave Grossman argues that “killing does not come naturally; you have to be taught to kill,” (481). It also is often rewarded rather than punished, for instance when you kill or shoot someone in the videogame, you are rewarded of getting money. It can effect a child’s life and can lead to bigger consequences; making kids think it is a good idea, but it is something that the media allows. For instance, there should only allow adults buy violent videogames and not let children play, a law should be enforced and banned violent video games that include inappropriate behavior, shooting or killing. For example video games are the ones that contain violence. For example, the video game Call of Duty, contains graphical violence. It’s a popular video game that children play frequently. The video game involves constantly killing using realistic weapons, with blood pouring making it seem realistic. It frequently shows frequent profanity and some sexual themes, and drug use. For instance it is similar to other videogames involving shooting people and killing, which is not the appropriate age that a children should be playing with. The consequences of playing the video game Call of Duty leads to a child that spends most of their time playing videogames that include violence, has a higher chance of developing anger issues, getting into trouble, and failing in their daily procedures. For example, disobeying parents, not receiving good grades, etc… People learn better when they are actively involved, like playing a sport, volunteering, helping out their community, and doing extracurricular activities that will engage children to achieve better things in life. Also, videogame players are more likely to identify with a violent character. For instance if the game is a first person shooter, players have the same visual perspective as the killer and the children want to do the same thing as the character in the video game. The internet can also include inappropriate behavior that can expose children to commit violent crimes. Common forms of aggression that are shown frequently on the internet is cyber bullying. Violence usually is conceived as more extreme form of physical aggression that are likely to result in physical injury such as punching, verbal inappropriate vocabulary, writing hurtful comments to another person. For example, the internet causes violence between children of all ages. It can involve violence or brutal behavior. It can also show inappropriate behavior or even worse, any person committing a crime. In addition, there might be picture or videos that show inappropriate behavior and can include violence. It can lead to consequences of bullying others, not only physical but emotional too. However, there have been many cases of children getting kidnapped, because they communicate with others, but worst case resulting in their death. The results of cyber bullying lead someone to commit suicide, and it starts off in the internet. A reason why someone commits suicide is because they have been cyber bullied or have been named called on the internet. This happens when the aggressor, makes the person being bullied feel horrendous, and end up killing themselves. For example, a 12-year-old girl named Rebecca Sedwick from Florida was bullied and cyber bullied and tormented by fifteen other girls at school. Rebecca who was brutally jumped from a concrete soil tower to her death, receiving menacing messages on Facebook calling her ugly, telling her to “drink bleach and die,” and encouraging her to kill herself. Not only was Rebecca being bullied online, but it escalated to confrontations at school, including at least one physical attack. Most of the time people who bully others, it’s because they show low self-esteem, and have serious aggression problems. Probably in their childhood years they were exposed to aggressive behavior and plenty of violence throughout their life that made the bully show aggressive behavior towards the aggressor Rebecca. This shows that children should not be exposed to violent behavior in any way, and in the future start showing their aggressive behavior. Parents have to take action by being caution on what their children are exposed to. Not only taking action, but being aware of what their children are exposed to. This responsibility is not only to feed and clothe, but to nurture their minds, their values, and set the best examples we can possibly show them. We should not expose children to violence in any way, such as videogames and the internet. We need to make a change to give the children a better future where they’re not exposed to violence and commit a crime. Overall, children should not be exposed to violence which can lead to kids commit violent crimes. This can be a serious problem that affects children’s life in many ways or even in worse case scenarios. They both have a huge impact of how society now a days has inappropriate language, violent action, or even destructive behavior. The best solution is not allowing exposing children to video games and the internet. I do believe that media and the society has a big part of being involved. We need to make a change to give the children a better future where there not exposed to violence.
