Ben Cousins – “Such is Life”
1) Recount the major issues that are presented in the documentary “Such is Life”.
Such is Life is a documentary on Ben Cousins life with drugs and how it affected his life and his career. Ben started in playing for West Coast Eagles in 1996 when he was 17 and that was around the same time his early drug taking days began, and later became captain for West Coast Eagles at 22 in 2001. In 2005 after they lost their grand final by 4 to Sydney Swans Ben went on a 6 day binge where he took multiple different types of drugs one include cocaine and alcohol, the media find out about it and he was just fined.
Ben Cousins later resigned from being captain in 2006. He thought his behavior wasn’t affecting anyone and let the fame and money get to his head. He was suspended for excessive drug use and inappropriate behavior outside of the club and it was giving the club a bad name in 2007 and he was later sent to a rehab felicity in LA. Ben was suspended for a year and in that time a lot happened he came back from rehab after 28 days and was doing good for himself, he made an apology towards the public for his behavior but it was hard for him to do because of the pressure from the press and the fact that he believed he hadn’t harmed anyone. He was doing well for himself when his friend Chris Mainwaring died of a drug overdose.
The death of Chris affected Ben hard because Chris had taken Ben under his arm from the start and helped him through tough times. But Ben was very thankful that he didn’t use drugs with Chris the night that he died. In 2007, October 17th, he was discarded from West Coast and boarded a plane to LA for more rehab.
In late October, early November everyone was sure he was dying after a backlash when he arrived in LA not checking into the rehab felicity. November 17th he was suspended by the AFL from playing for 12 months. In March 2008 he had been clean for 30 days. He did a bit of damage to his self after hurting
