ASSIGNMENT 1

TITLE
HYBRID CARS: THE BEST OR THE WORST CHOICE?

PREPARED BY:

PREPARED FOR: DR. CAESAR DEALWIS

HYBRID CARS: THE BEST OR THE WORST CHOICE?

CLAIM 1
Hybrid cars can help to save money.

REASONS: Hybrid cars use combination of fuel engine and electric generator which consume less fuel.

EVIDENCE: You won’t have to spend as much money on fuel. Hybrid cars have an electric motor as well as a gasoline engine. The gasoline engine is not engaged during low speeds, which saves money on your fuel costs. (page 1, paragraph 1, line 1) http://www.easy-green-living.org/advantages-disadvantages-hybrid-cars.html OBJECTION 1
Hybrid cars do not help to save money

REASONS: Hybrid cars are much more expensive than conventional cars.

EVIDENCE: The biggest disadvantage of hybrid cars is that they are still fairly expensive, namely the production of hybrid cars still has relatively high costs. Hybrid cars therefore usually cost in range from $2,000 to $5,000 more than their non-Hybrid versions. The high costs of hybrid cars are usually the results of using very rare materials in their production (for instance dysprosium used to fabricate many of the advanced electric motors and battery systems in hybrid propulsion systems, and neodymium used as a crucial ingredient in high-strength magnets that are found in permanent magnet electric motors). (page 8, paragraph 4, line 1) http://www.renewables-info.com/drawbacks_and_benefits/hybrid_cars_advantages_and_disadvantages.html CLAIM 2
Hybrid cars help to reduce pollution.

REASONS: Hybrid cars emit low emissions.

EVIDENCE: There are two main advantages of hybrid cars compared to traditional cars, one is lower CO2 emissions, and therefore less impact

    * One of the unique features of a hybrid is that when you first put your foot on the gas pedal to get started from a stopped position, the electric motor is the first thing to engage. The advantage to this is that this is also the point in standard engines where they pollute the most. Also, a hybrid Camry engine shuts off when stopped so no fuel is burning and producing green-house gases. Because of these features, emissions from a hybrid can decrease by as much as 90 percent.…

With the evolution of hybrid vehicles some consumers have made a commitment to affect the environment in a very positive way. A hybrid car is a vehicle that combines two or more sources of power that can directly or indirectly provide propulsion power. Cities like Seattle have public busses that run on diesel but are also electric and powered by wires throughout the city. Once away from these wires, the diesel engine starts to function as a second contributor to the movement of the bus, but the electric engine is mainly functioning throughout the lifespan of these public busses. This system produces a minimum amount of negative carbon released into the atmosphere. Although cities have adopted this requisite, people are starting to adjust to it as well. Not only does owning a hybrid vehicle benefit the future, but also getting extraordinary mileage to the gallon is economical.…

There are several advantages to using alternative fuels or hybrid vehicles in a rental fleet. Some of these are company image, reduced spill hazard, and economic benefits. When considering the air quality an alternative fueled vehicle has lower emission levels than the traditional gasoline engine. Generally speaking, when a vehicle is first started the emissions released are at their highest for a gasoline engine. A vehicle that runs on natural gas creates a very low release of carbon while a hydrogen powered vehicle only produces water as a byproduct.…

Thesis Statement: The government and certain car manufacturing companies shouldn’t be promoting energy conserving vehicles as zero emissions vehicles because 1) the process of manufacturing electric cars pollutes the environment; 2) recharging the car uses a tremendous amount of fossil fuels; 3)The cost to manufacture an electric and hybrid vehicle is tremendous.…

I think hybrid vehicles became popular more fast than other cars because it gave people the choice of which fuel they wanted to use. Hybrid vehicles can run on electricity and or gasoline. Hybrid vehicles gives you more mileage and allows you to go further for longer, when you run out of gas you can go on electricity.…

Gasoline powered vehicles are better! No, hybrids are better! Have you heard these two points-of-view? This last election, the question of energy was a part of both party’s platforms. They talked about wind and solar versus coal and oil, and gasoline versus hybrid vehicles. So here we are, the election is over, but the battle between a gasoline powered vehicles versus a hybrid continues. You might know someone who owns a hybrid car. My uncle bought one in 2006 and for him it works great, but he usually just travels back and forth to work. However, my uncle’s needs are not the same as my dad who is a contractor. In the end, you need to weigh the pros and cons before deciding on which vehicle is best for you. After much research, it is my opinion that a gasoline powered car is better than a hybrid for these reasons: purchase and repair costs, towing and passenger/cargo capacity, and the cars impact on the environment.…

These hybrid car pose many environmental impacts such as smog producing gases. Hybrid cars can produce fewer gas emissions then conventional cars, but not less than we think. The issues with plug-in hybrid cars is that the electricity they use comes from our existing power grid. The most of our electricity comes from coal and a little from nuclear power, which is in fact nasty to our environment. A hybrid vehicle can be as much as 20 percent more expensive than conventional cars. To determine the actual fuel savings over a typical year of driving, compare the operating cost of a hybrid versus a standard model. A U.S. Department of Transportation summary, dated February 2003, reports the average American driver between the ages of 34 and 55 drives 15,291 miles annually (see References 4). Divide this annual mileage figure by 21 miles to the gallon for the standard model, and you will find that you would buy about 728 gallons of gasoline a year. In contrast, if you divide the annual miles figure by 30 for the hybrid, you would determine that the annual gas purchase…

Hybrid cars are controversial today because the hybrid cars still burn gasoline and emit greenhouse gases and they still have to use gasoline to power the battery. The hybrid only adds efficiency to the gasoline engine, instead of replacing it entirely. The hybrid car remains as a major emitter of pollution. While it may contribute less to global warming, it still contributes significantly. If people keep switching to hybrids over time yes the contribution towards global warming will less eminent, but it will still continue to pollute the…
