John Misto, playwright of the Shoe-Horn Sonata has clearly brought forward the women's story to the audience. Shoe-Horn is a very powerful Australian play that seeks to commemorate the endurance and heroic struggle of women interned in Japanese POW camps during World War II. Misto achieves this through a combination of dramatic techniques, themes, characterisation and settings making the past vivid and understandable. The characters presented in the Shoe-Horn Sonata are fictional, but the events are based on true stories/re-collections from living World War II veterans. Bridie and Sheila are the two main characters, accompanied by an unseen character and his voice, Rick the interviewer. The attention of the audience is entirely focused on the characters of Bridie and Sheila, as they recollect past stories and events. Misto uses a…

Longus was a Greek novelist who was thought to be alive during the third century A.D. and coming from the island of Lesbos. He wrote the novel Daphnis et Chloé as four books. It was found by a French bishop in the sixteenth century and translating, after which the story rose to popularity in the Renaissance (Longus 1). In addition to Ravel’s musical score, Mikhail Fokine was in charge of choreography. All the components for Daphnis et Chloé took just over three years to come together. Ravel’s collaborators included Fokine, Bakst, Diaghilev and Nijinsky (Gutmann). Daphnis et Chloé is Ravel’s longest work, taking just under an hour to perform. Ravel and Fokine struggled working together. Ravel was more influenced by eighteenth century paintings…

The greatest composer who ever lived was Ludwig van Beethoven. He knew music spoke to the heart, creating emotions, no other language could. Beethoven conveyed his feeling through the power of his music and wasn’t scared to enter unfamiliar territory when it came to his work. People weren’t used to the type of music he brilliantly composed during his time and succeeded against all odds when he lost his hearing. One of my favorite time periods was from 1803 through 1814 which was referred to as “the middle period”. This was a time period Beethoven experimented with his music leading him to change his composition style by incorporating more Romantic ideas leading him to compose songs like Symphony Number Three Eroica and One of my favorites Fifth Symphony.…

The lackluster response to the Annapolis meeting might have been repeated the following spring, but for the violence that erupted in Massachusetts over the fall and winter. To Hamilton, Shays' Rebellion was the direct and inevitable result of the weak national government. The attempt by Massachusetts to pay off its war debts on its own had resulted in a crushing tax burden, especially for farmers unable to produce the required gold or silver currency. The consequence, in Hamilton's mind, was predictable: lawless mobs, assaults on property, and anarchy.…
