Basketball Positions
Basketball is one of the most interesting sports in the world to watch or even play, but it’s not that interesting if you don’t understand it. For those who have just seen this sport in action on television or just watch your buddies play a pick-up game; don’t you ever wonder, why does this player go here or what does that guy do on the court? I’m here to explain all of that so you completely understand the role of each player on the court. They would usually number the players from 1-5 because that is how many player each team and is allowed to be on the court at the same; it is a lot easier than calling the names such as: point guard, shooting guard, small forward, power forward, or center.
The point guard (1) has a very important role in a game. At most times they would be looked to as, “the floor general” or “player coach” on the court. They are usually the one who brings the ball down the court and would call out the plays. They are also very important because they would be the one who most times leads the team and would be calling the plays. There are two types of point guards, one type would be look more into shooting than to passing the ball and the other one would shoot the ball sometimes but most times look for the pass first. A perfect example would be one of the greatest point guards of all time, and his name was Earvin “Magic” Johnson (Los Angeles Lakers). He is also known for his unique passing abilities throughout the NBA.
There is one other position that is similar to the point guard position and that would be the shooting guard (2). The two positions can be interchangeable at any time during the game. The reason the shooting guard is selected for that specific position is because they are usually the team’s best shooter and is able to consistently hit long range shots. A versatile shooting guard would usually have a skill similar to a point guard which would be passing a ball accurately. Kobe Bryant (Los Angeles Lakers)

According to Dale Hanson’s book Basketball, the first of these original rules was that the player could throw the ball anywhere with one or both hands; the second rule was that one may hit the ball anywhere with one or both hands. The third rule was that players could not run with the ball, and the fourth rule was that the ball was to be held in between the hands. The fifth of these rules explained that there was to be no fouling, “shouldering, holding, pushing, tripping, or striking in any way” (66), and that a second foul could result in the player being banned until another goal was made. The sixth rule expressed that hitting the ball with a fist would result in a foul, and the seventh rule said that three repeated fouls from the same team would result in a point for the opposing team. The eighth rule determined that a point would be scored when a player shot or hit the ball into the goal from the ground. The ninth of these rules stated that after the ball was knocked out-of-bounds, the ball would be thrown in and only played by the player who caught the ball. Rules ten and eleven pertained to the umpire and referee. The umpire had the ability to disqualify players whereas the referee determined whether the ball was in-bounds, decided to which team the ball belonged, and also kept track of the playing time. The twelfth rule expressed how long…

The data we will be using to compare these two point guards will be ppg (points per game), assist, steals, turnovers, field goal percentage and awards. Why? Because these categories of data are the things that make up a point game and most of the time their objective in the game to do good in one of those categories. The reason we chose these to pgs is because they are bot dominant at their position and now its time to see who is better.…

The point guard plays on top of the key on offense to get the points for his team or runs plays to score a basket another way. He calls out plays so they can get a open shot against the other team Also, the point guard likes to shoot threes or drive to the hoop to get a and 1 or a foul. The point guard is really good at dribbling the ball and can break ankles on the court when he is on offense. When there is not a lot of time on the clock and the point guard has the ball and he is losing by one with 10 seconds left he runs down the court to shoot a three or a two or drive in for layup to get the fouled. The guard is the main important position on the court. The guard is the head of the offensive plays and the middle person in a defensive play. He or she is able to call which plays to use during offense, and runs the ball down the court. The guard also is the main ball handler, meaning that this person can keep the ball away from the other team with no problems. The guard is also fast on their feet and is able to switch from offense to defense in the matter of seconds. Another important factor the guard must be able to do is to sprint down the other side of the court fast enough before the other team shoots the basket. The guard must be strong enough to get through the wings on the opposing team and use the other members to help make a basket. The guard must be quick on their feet and must know how to control the ball. The guard is also a leader and leads each member of the team to its right position.…

Throughout this process, I have gained an abundance of knowledge about this game that I love most. A combination of how I was raised, my personality, and my skill on the court have molded and favored a way that I prefer to watch this sport be played. One coach I connect to the most is Tom Izzo. I love how he orchestrates his offense, and the high expectations he has of his players.…
